Democracy demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal, rather than religion-specific, values. It requires that their proposals be subject to argument, and amenable to reason. I may be opposed to abortion for religious reasons, but if I seek to pass a law banning the practice, I cannot simply point to the teachings of my church or evoke God's will. Coupled with a series of posts on
cf_hardcore about the serious erosion of the freedom to choose, I may have to vote Democrat this year in the general.
OTOH, there are a lot of months between now and then. Now, I'll primary-vote for McCain. Then... well, we'll see what happens in the next nine months. Nine months is an eternity in politics.
It may actually be that I have more of a voice as an Independent swing-voter than as a Republican, at least while I still live in an open-primary state.
