I'm writing a novel. It's a psychological horror novel about a family living in New Orleans, LA. It chronicles the way their lives are drifting apart, the way they struggle with their addictions and secrets. It's also about a family of vampires who buys the house next door. Their "daughter," a vampire under one hundred years old, is disputatious toward her "father" and confrontational toward her world, in general. These vampires have every family dynamic that the humans do, and they too have their vices and their dramas. It's a story about how the paranormal bleeds into the every day, the way humanity is tinged with horrors and meandering secrets.
The name of the novel is particularly meaningful to me because the definition of dusk is "the darker stage of twilight." I am forever faithful to vampire fiction, and I find deplorable this entire Twilight epidemic. Hence the title. I want to bring back vampires that are dark, brooding the way people can, but magnified by the fact that they've been alive for so long, and seen so much. I want to again see the vampires that can be described as gentleman death. I want blood, I want violence, and I want sex.
I'm excited to take the step of transitioning from the written medium to the typed. My goal is to have the first draft finished by the start of the fall semester (August 20th), and from there... I will seek publication.
Starting to become nervous, because I'm going to make this real.
