Back at my call shop typing on the keyboard for the blind!
Soooo about that Friday night and I'm in Venice party I had planned? Turns out Venice has no night life! Who knew? Suddenly this whole being a vacation spot for old people makes a bit more sense. I managed to go bar hopping with the guy who runs the hostel and a few other guests last night. Got three drinks in me before everything closed its doors at 12 freaking 30!!!!!!! I'm still blown by that. Lucas (the hostel dude) says it's better during the summer. Guess I'm SOL in that department. Haven't met anyone I would call friends yet but there was this Japanese kid I kinda hung around last night and this other Aussie gal who were both nice. There's also this guy on a quest to find Byrons house (I smell a gothling)so I have a feeling there may be a possibility of chattting it up at some point.
Still no flooding but high tides -a- brewing. Lucus said the basement (which is also the way out) will likely be flooded before I leave. My place is directly on the water with a private bridge taking you to the front door. Man I want it to flood....just a little. I want to take in the city on planks pirate style!
Today was spent on the Islands of Murano and Burano. TOTALLY worth the ride on the water bus. I didn't make it to Burano until sunset but like the golden temple in Japan I think I was meant to catch it in that light. I wasn't interested in buying lace but I could easily spend another day there taking pictures. I used up most of the day in Murano looking for glass blowing (a lot of places are not in production on weekends and will not demo without a certain number of tourists present.) Mission accomplished in the late afternoon and well worth the wait. The master glass blower kept getting in my face and saying things to me that I don't pretend to understand. My Japanese is better then my Italian and that reeeeeally isn't saying much. I don't believe he was hitting on me. It was more along the lines of getting me to buy the horse he was molding or something to that effect. No thanks man but your awesome and I totally bought a Morano glass ring as that was in the budget. Speaking of budget...no Gondola rides for me. I originally wanted to do it but 90 Euro for 30 minutes? I think not. Maybe if I wasn't alone and not for the reasons of splitting the cost. It's a romantic COUPLE thing to do and in all honesty the idea of me riding around on a gondola on my own feels a little silly. Not spending too much on anything here which is a BIG plus. The hostel provides breakfast and dinner and lets face it...there are only so many churches I care to visit and I think I met that quota in Ireland. This is a city for walking around and people watching. I guarentee this will change in Florence and Rome.
