Character

I've noticed how different things seem to be between all of my online friends. We were all once so close. And now it feels like I hardly know many of you because I've failed to keep regular conversations or something to bond over, and gotten closer to just a couple. But when I see journal entries or have conversations with old friends, I remember why we became friends in the first place. And I also notice the differences time has created between us.

Sometimes it seems like in our youth, we're given these core personality traits, these ideals or morals we aspire to, but we're still learning the world so everything's still pretty flexible. And then as we get older, those ideals or morals just seem stronger, perhaps more strict in some instances, perhaps changed, but there's still that core ideal we aspire to be and it reflects in our choices, actions, and words.

Does it ever seem like we continue to walk one path with our personality, further ingraining it into our choices and losing the flexibility we once had? We are becoming the persons we want to be. But I also think we are growing further and further apart as our paths take us in different directions.

Sometimes it seems like young people are more at the whimsy of their peers whereas the elderly are hardwired to hold the same old opinions, the same old choices, the same old ideas. From the willow to the oak. Is that what age does? Is that what life does?

Is it possible to simply remain flexible?

I have a feeling many of us begin to grow inflexible with our personality without even realizing it. Open-mindedness, I think is what I should call this flexibility. But to say we are becoming close-minded seems like an insult. I don't want it to sound as such. I simply think we are stronger versions of our past selves, less bending to the whims of the world, but also becoming ingrained with these personality traits, unable to change as easily as we might have once done in our youth, unable to absorb experiences like we once did.
