Linguist you say? AWESOME!! I love it. Listened to lingustic anthropology once semester. Seriously awesome and interesting. I had a seminar about discourse and culture. Really interesting. Then I took cognitive lingustics and then I totally fell in love with it. It had to choose between linguist anthro, behavioural anthro and forensic... At the moment the latter won and I will get a PhD one day, but I will have an affair with lingustics...

My sis (There's just the two of us and she's younger than me) is hoping to get into medical school in the next year or so. As for me, I'm almost finished with my BA in linguistics and I dunno what I'll do next
really? wow!! I think that you are honestly one of the first people I know who is excited about linguistics! lol most people outside my dept think that I'm insane to go into it...
I think that we're going to get along really well!

Yes, I know. A lot of people don't like linguistics because it looks difficult and confusing. With all the rules and definitions, but to discard it just because it's difficult, now those people are just lazy.
They told me that I'm insane and weird for going into forensics. After the figured out that my job isn't really like the CSI one, more like Bones with smelly things.
I think that too!!

lol most people just think that I'm doing English and go a bit glossy eyed when I try to explain!
Bones is wicked cool!! yeah, CSI is interesting but it's not as messy! ;)
I'm now working on a brain project where I have to make up an experiment to do with language since using actual machines would cost tons of money! but it's awfully interesting!

Ah, yes. Explaining to other people what yoz study. It's like explaining where the Holy Grail is. They probably think it's something akin to English grammar and proper way to speak. Seriously, tell them to buy a dictionary. That's how I handle the question "what is anthropology"?
CSI is classy. You know elegant and stuff. But nobody ever gave me a gun and told to ran down a suspect. Though I could get training in that too.
It does seem interesting. What does it do? Something to do with the brain waves and the language? The way it's differential for each?

Sis has a great job. Really interesting 'cause she gets to meet a lot of people from all over the world.
TV hypes things a bit too much. And everything looks so fast and quickly resolved. In real life, you wait for results even days. Especially DNA results. Yes, that is true. The forensics are now really developed and pretty much nothing can get pass them. Now, even professors from the institutes and colleges consult in criminal investigations. Seriously cool.
But some of this cases are pretty groosome and difficult to deal with. Especially for someone who's not used to them. So they are really careful about choosing the students for assisting with autopsies and reports. I moved from paperwork bussiness to actual business. And gotta tell you, I'm more impressed them grossed out.
It wasn't too confusing. Really interesting! We just went through baics with cognitive ling. Which is sad, but only on semestre.

Oh that's seriously cool now that you get to do the actual business! :D
cognitive linguitics is really cool- I usually deal with more of the theory side of linguistics but I really did love psycholinguistics when I took the course.
The Brain Imaging was much more on the brain and how they use the different machines to look at the brain rather than linguistics because the lecturer felt that the linguistics we knew and the brain stuff we didn't :P
