Mr. Neighbor's ranting gets him a beating

I am SO upset.

Mr. Neighbor, remember, is autistic. It's sometimes slightly indetectable. Hang around him long enough and it's detectable. When he's under a great deal of stress, it's definitely detectable. He's been under a great deal of stress lately. I'd give details, but I'm in no mood. Just trust me, he's been under a great deal of stress.

When he's stressed, it's as though he wants to stress himself further. He's mad at himself. He's mad at me. However, he takes it out on either his doctor, the hospital or the police. He will call one (or two or maybe all three), usually to register a complaint. So, yes, occasionally he can be a nuisance.

Last week, during a stressed-out nuisance phase, he called the hospital to register a complaint about the way he had been treated the last time he was there. He had been forced to take tranquilizers. (Mr. Neighbor is extremely afraid of hospitals and doctors. As a child, he was severely mistreated by them. It's really sad. His excuse for them is that they didn't know about autism at the time.) I guess he was nuisance enough that someone from the hospital called the police on him. The police came to tote him away. (For being a phone-in nuisance!) When he gets toted away, the police first tote him to the hospital for tranquilizers (which also scares the hell out of him), then it's off to jail for a cooling off. Being morbidly afraid of doctors, hospitals and tranquilizers, when the officers arrived, Mr. Neighbor put up a stink and said he didn't want to be toted away. After a good deal of arguing, I'm sure, the police handcuffed him AND BEAT HIM WITH THEIR CLUBS! This was a week ago. He just told me about it. He's got bad, bad bruises all up and down his arm and bruises and a gouge on his back.

I am so bloody upset over this. The police here KNOW what they are dealing with when they deal with Mr. Neighbor--an autistic man whose only known method of coping with stress is to make nuisance phone calls.

I am just so upset.

He was beat with clubs. And this is after they had already handcuffed him.

I am so, so upset.

ADDENDUM: Okay, I just remembered what is sure to be a key point. When overstressed, Mr. Neighbor does talk about blowing up doctors' offices and hospitals. (If you'd heard of how he was treated as a child, you'd perhaps empathize.) This is not new, though. The police and hospital personnel have heard it all before, many times. Mr. Neighbor has lived here for nearly 15 years and makes his nuisance calls every month or two. (Back when I first met Mr. Neighbor and learned of his nuisance calls, I was aghast that the police did nothing about them other than haul him in overnight.) So, okay, a bomb threat is a very serious matter. I don't know. Did he really deserve a beating? I just cannot imagine that he did.
