the rain follows her 3,000 miles. she blows through town under the premise of a step-grandmother's funeral. i am put off for others. jenny (scooper), her baby young husband, their toddler and the twins (new news) in scooper's belly. there is a mother/daughter lunch to go to, too.
we do the mundane. to the post office!

we are waiting in a drive-thru line. waiting, waiting, waiting patient for our milkshakes. i play with her hair with one hand and slip the other into my purse to call thin jarad. this requires too much coordination so i switch to tugging at her right earlobe.
driver, don't you dare fall asleep. this is our goodbye for a whole entire year. you will fly back east and your school will steal your brain.
he'll be by at 8. we'll see a late movie and eat waffles for dinner. corpse bride. teeth brushing and kisses until sleep hits us over the head.
a 5 am wakeup because the world is soggy and heavy and loud. i bolt downstairs in a puffy plaid jacket ugly jeans frenzy. the back windows of the car are down. i roll them up because you are too warm to care, and i am a warrior. worrier?
oh, that sleepover was nice even though i had bad dreams about melting flour sack babies and rah rah fight fight fights!
