[Character IC Information]
Character Name and Series: Galinda Upland from Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
Name in Role Play: Galinda 'Glinda' Upland
Race/Ethnicity: Human magic user/Dutch
Age: 28
Gender: Female
Appearance:
Glinda is bubbly. She's perky and bright and glowy and to not take notice of her is to be blind. She has rich golden hair that goes down to her shoulders in big, full curls that frame her face. Her skin is a healthy peach color [decidedly not green thankyou! ] and oh-so smooth from excessive moisturizing and careful pampering. She has full pouty red-lips, an adorable nose, and just dazzling blue eyes. Glinda is rather short, a fact she tries to hide with her high heels, and barely makes it to most other people's shoulders. Her frame is quite curvaceous and she has a healthy amount of muscle and fat on her to bring her weight to something in the average for her age and size. She hasn't got a scar or scratch on her body, no beauty marks, and no other real defining characteristics.

For clothing, Glinda is always in style. She wears the latest trends and showiest fabrics and would not be seen outside of her apartment in anything less than her best. She likes flashy clothing in bright pinks, blues, and yellows with sequins and sparkles and frills and poofs that, even while exceptionally ridiculous looking, still manages to compliment her figure and complexion. Glinda has taken a great liking to the fashions of Allupato and has seen to it that dozens of dresses were added into her already gigantic wardrobe. She does own a few smart dress-suits as well for more formal meetings, but she is usually seen in her flamboyant dresses. She would not be caught dead in a pair of pants, heaven forbid jeans, and other casual clothing is also entirely out of the question.

Personality:
If there is one word that describes Glinda then that word would be shallow. She is in a constant state of judgment of those around her and anyone who is even a fraction less than perfect is automatically labeled as strange and unworthy of her time. Her ultimate goal is to climb to the very top of the social ladder and sit tight there, so she doesn't even think of befriending people unless they are just a little higher on the ladder than she is so she can get ahead [but not so high that she would look a disgrace, of course!]. She might make an exception if you are a very beautiful person, but you would have to be at least as half as beautiful as she is and that's impossible in Glinda-land.

She thinks of her own standing and how she looks in front of others before she thinks of anything else, so she's extremely self-conscious. She is not prone to outburst or any other sort of action because she is very careful about the image she displays. Glinda makes attempts at wit and often thinks herself very smart, despite a well-rooted knowledge of the fact that she isn't as clever as she pretends. Still, she somehow manages to talk herself out of tricky situations with rapid-fire lies and exaggerations that often fool those she is speaking to. It becomes quite difficult sometimes when she cannot recall exactly what lie she has said to whom, or when she forgets she lied altogether.

Glinda does things for herself and will rarely, if ever, go out of her way to benefit another in a way that did not also benefit herself. She doesn't really care about others and can't bring herself to attempt to, especially the less desirable ones, so she doesn't bother. Even those she considers 'friends' are not immune to her self-centered ways. She frequently will badmouth them behind their backs without a shred of guilt and will ditch them at the drop of a hat to go do something more socially acceptable. She'll even insult them to their faces on occasion, but she does it so well and with such a sweet smile that she must be joking [hah!].

She's extremely social and loves to chatter, but she knows when it is wise to shut her mouth. Glinda will not speak for the sake of speaking alone, and everything she says has a point even if the point might not be clear to the person she's talking to. She is extremely well-mannered towards others, especially those in higher standing, and knows her place all too well. Glinda is a conformist who does not want to rock the boat, but sail across the pond smoothly. People speaking out against the 'natural order of things' are tolerated by her but if they make any attempt to engage her in their strange activities she will not take any of it. She's perfectly content with things the way they are and would find anyone trying to change it a bit mad.

Despite all this vapid personality and carefully planned politeness, Glinda does have a brain that works on occasion. She knows it's there and she loathes it as she does not want to think about things. Sometimes she slips and says what is really on her mind, but this is promptly met with a rejection of that very same thought. She does not seem to like her own free will very much sometimes, and is often annoyed with her own thoughts.

Abilities/Weaponry:
Glinda is a grey-magic user with considerable natural talent but a real lack of application. While she's taken many lessons on the subject, she has a real problem doing anything useful with her magic and thus it ends up appearing to be nothing more than parlor tricks. She can do simple things with a few gestures these days such as make small objects float, change clothing to a different color, make sandwiches explode, turn water into orange juice, and other small things that won't really affect anyone [unless they ended up somehow having a deathly allergy to orange juice]. Glinda's teacher attempted to instruct her in black magic but it really did not interest her, so she didn't take to it.

However, she does know two useful spells. One is a grey magic spell that can repair things that have been broken. A small chant and a few hand gestures later the object will mend itself back together with little difficult. The bigger the object, the more chanting and energy it will take to repair. This does not work on humans, so it should not be confused with a healing spell.

The other is the only white magic spell she knows is a ward against demons. It's a complicated spell, one that requires an enchanted necklace she owns. When she wants to use it she has to draw out a complex rune with white chalk on a flat surface, place the necklace on it, and then complete a chant and use a smear of her own blood on the piece of jewelry. It take a great deal of energy for this ward, and it only lasts for a 24 hour period, thus Glinda rarely goes through the effort unless she is feeling especially paranoid.

Besides all this magical mumbo-jumbo, Glinda is also very good at talking her way out of tricky situations. She is pretty good at thinking on her feet and can often come up with elaborate tales to avoid disaster.

She's fluent in English, Dutch, Italian, and French from her travels and general interest in each culture.

Weaknesses:
Glinda is a very, very silly human. While she has a decent head on her when she isn't trying to ignore her brain, she still fails prey to many silly mistakes. She has no body strength really worth mentioning, and if something were to catch her she would be screwed. She knows no self-defense and her idea of attacking someone usually involves whacking them with her fan or handbag. Glinda is not a difficult target.

Her tiny grey magic spells do take a toll on her, and if she does too many silly little things she will get excessively tired. Using either of her two useful spells will leave her unable to do any other magic for some time and the demon-ward is something she can only make realistically once a week without doing harm to herself. Magic in general takes a toll on anyone, and Glinda is no different, and the light lines that are beginning to show around her eyes and lips are signs of her use, even though she covers them up splendidly with her makeup.

History:
Galinda Upland was born in Holland in the Netherlands to a country family that was well off. While they were not the richest family, they still did quite well for themselves, and Galinda has never known a day of wanting. She grew up here and enjoyed a life of privilege and socialization among other farm-girls who lived nearby. She was home tutored by her aunt and despite her best efforts she showed she had at least some grasp of what was being spoon fed to her, so she applied to University. To the shock of her parents she was accepted to a school in London and nearly as soon as she received the letter they shipped her off with her Ama Clutch to the city so far away. Galinda could not be happier about it as it would broaden her social horizons and she'd always heard the city was so smart.

Shiz University was just about everything Galinda imagined it would be, and she was eager to settle in and join a few social cliques. Sadly her Ama was not able to come on the journey with her and arrange her housing setup so she was stuck with some awful green girl named Elphaba.

Ew!

Galinda tried so very bravely to ignore this strange green girl in her room but despite herself she grows quite fond of her. There was something strangely attractive about the weird girl with the book-fetish and the constant nagging that Galinda actually think. They become friends of a sort but Galinda never could bring herself to be seen in public with her, and frequently she spoke ill of her among more socially acceptable parties.

Even though Galinda had hoped that Elphaba would be the only strange thing that University brought but she would simply not have her way. A woman named Madam Morrible who belonged to a secret conclave of magic users in the University brought Elphaba and Galinda into her group, much to Galinda's protest. She did not want to learn this magic mumbo-jumbo and certainly didn't want to be thought of as strange because of it. Sadly she has a fair amount of skill for magic and while Morrible attempted to get her to practice black magic and develop further, Galinda has no interest in it and stayed with her simple spells. Morrible saw this as a gross waste of potential, especially when Elphaba's own massive potential seemed largely uncontrollable, and schemed up her own wicked plans for the girls.

During this time in their schooling they both had a class that was taught by a horrible goat-fey named Dr. Dillamond. This fool was open about the fact he was a fey and was an activist for supernatural creatures rights in London, despite the fact most people did not believe in such things at all. Galinda simply hated this man for he was impossible to look in the eye and always pronounced her name Glinda and not as the proper Galinda. However with Elphaba's growing interest in supernatural creatures rights Galinda's own mind was at least opened a bit to the possibility they weren't filthy creatures who needed to die, and she found the man tolerable.

Naturally the professor was murdered by an anti-fey group and Galinda in an attempt to look sentimental decided to change her name to Glinda in his honor.

What? She thought it was quite honorable of herself.

Not too long after this Glinda and Elphaba were sent to meet with the head of the conclave who was codenamed 'The Wizard of OZ'. During their meeting it was revealed that the conclave was exceptionally prejudiced against supernatural creatures and often used them in horrible magical experiments. While this did bother Glinda a little, she was never one to upset things and simply accepted it. Elphaba was not so passive and she declared war on the conclave and fled. While she had asked Glinda to join her, she promptly refused. She'd have no part in whatever craziness the girl got herself into, and this was seen as some sort of defense of the conclave. Henceforth they called her 'Glinda the Good', and was seen as a beacon of truth and goodness in the conclave.

Glinda wasn't entirely sure how that happened but she was more than content to go along with it. Shortly after she graduated University she married Sir Chuffrey, a rich man who had many land holdings throughout Europe, and settled down with him. She still had to pay visits to the conclave and make appearances to keep up their hopes against that dreadful Wicked Witch of the West, also known as Spain. Since Elphaba was down in the west and Glinda lived near the Conclave in England her own title was extended to 'The Good Witch of the North'.

After many years of fruitless marriage due to the fact Glinda could not bear children, they moved to northern Italy to relax. Sadly only after a few years here Chuffrey contracted a terrible illness. After a year of being a bedridden mess he passed away and since they had no children, Glinda inherited his fortune and promptly because an extremely wealthy widow.

She was thrilled about the money, but she was depressed because she did love her hubby and could not bear to remain in the house they'd shared. Glinda quickly moved to his summer home in Allupato to start a new life. She's been taking up an active interest in the architecture in Allupato and spends most of her time socializing, buying more wonderful Italian clothing, and enjoying walks through the better parts of the city.
