I finally went looking and found a link to the painting from 1630's that showed a servant in the background wearing an embroidered jacket. It's the
Allegory of Marital Fidelity by Jan Miense Molenaer, oil painting in 1633. It's in the VFMA, and the serving girl is on the left, bending down behind the lute player washing a glass.
Yippee!
