Keltie didn’t catch the new girl’s name. She must’ve walked in at some point after the blonde had starting blocking out their instructor’s voice. But Keltie thinks that maybe that was a mistake on her part because almost instantly her eye is drawn to the new girl.
There’s not really a reason for it except for how this girl is beyond fucking gorgeous. She’s tall and lanky, her arms and legs stretching out and seemingly going on forever. She’s thin, sharp hipbones jutting out from under her dark pants. The milky pale taut skin of her stomach is exposed seeing as she’s just wearing a sports bra over her mostly flat chest.
The girl’s head is bowed down, dark brown bangs falling in a jagged fringe into her eyes. She’s wringing her long, long fingers together and standing off by herself awkward and just this side of shy. For some reason Keltie is entranced.
Class starts and its easy for Keltie to keep her eyes on the girl, she already knows her steps by heart and she nails each step with ease. The new girl is not so fortunate. Her long limbs actually aren’t helping her and she stumbles over her own feet. The girl bites at her lips and doesn’t give up though; she keeps trying, pushing on despite her lack of grace.
As soon as their class is over Keltie goes to her duffle bag, pulls her bleach blonde hair into a messy ponytail and goes over to introduce herself to the new girl. The girl is bent over her own bag and despite all her awkward fumbling Keltie can see a sort of beauty she possess within her lithe frame.
“Hi!” The blonde chirps, she smiles widely at the other girl. The dark haired girl raises her head and turns to look at Keltie.
“Um…hi,” The girl says, she playing with her fingers again, bright blue nail polish chipped and clinging to the girl’s nails.
Keltie rests her hands on her hips and keeps her smile in place. “I’m Keltie, Keltie Colleen,” The blonde says and she offers one hand out to the new girl. The dark haired girl’s hand encloses over Keltie’s own and wow, her fingers really are very long, almost freakishly so.
“I’m um…I’m Ryan,” The dark haired girl mumbles. Keltie thinks the name fits this girl perfectly and she smiles warmly as their hands slip away. Ryan brushes her bangs out of her equally dark eyes and smiles sweetly. “Nice to meet you,” Ryan adds.
“Yeah, is um…is this your first dance class?” Keltie asks, she curls her fingers around the end of her blonde hair and waits for an answer. Ryan’s face scrunches up and it should be detrimental to the girl’s cute face but it’s not, Keltie thinks it’s sort of adorable.
“Was I that bad?” Ryan asks with a little laugh and Keltie bites her lip, Ryan’s laugh makes tiny sparks run down Keltie’s spine.
“Oh, no, I didn’t mean it that way. I just, I’ve never seen you here before.” Ryan bends back over her bag and Keltie subconsciously counts the knots of Ryan’s spine. Ryan pulls out a t-shirt, one advertising the name of a band that Keltie’s never heard of. Ryan tugs the shirt on over her bra, covering up pale skin and she flicks her hair out from under the collar of the shirt, the dark brown, flat ironed hair only falling down to the middle of the girl’s neck, not even touching her shoulders.
“It’s my first class,” Ryan confirms. “I’m not really much of a dancer,” She admits. “I’m actually a model and my agent suggested I take some dancing, to you know, loosen me up,” Ryan says with a little shrug.
“I’ve done some modeling,” Keltie says brightly. She neglects to inform Ryan that her modeling was more of the risqué variety but she figures it’s something Ryan can live without knowing. Ryan’s smile widens. “You know,” Keltie starts, “I could help you with your routine, you know, if you wanted?” Ryan’s eyes go all bright and sparkly and Keltie’s stomach does this weird fluttering thing.
“That’d actually be great, you’d save my ass,” Ryan giggles and it’s loud and happy and Keltie finds herself dying to hear it again. Keltie is so, so tempted to tell Ryan that there’s a lot more she could do to Ryan’s ass but she manages to hold it back. The two of them make plans to meet up at the class early and stay late so Keltie can help Ryan learn the routine, help her ‘loosen up’ as the girl’s agent had suggested. Keltie follows Ryan outside, waits with her on the stone steps of the building while waiting for Ryan’s ride to arrive.
Keltie digs out a cigarette and her lighter and flicks it to life, silver smoke creeps above her head. Ryan is sitting on the step, hands on her bony knees and for a moment Keltie is concerned that Ryan is one of those girls who will bitch up a storm if they even smell cigarette smoke. But instead Ryan smirks a little.
“Can I get a hit of that?” She asks and Keltie takes a small drag before she passes it down to Ryan, who takes it between her spidery digits and places the butt between her thin lips, inhales deeply once, twice, before she passes it back to Keltie. And they’re just two girls, two dancing clichés.
After maybe ten minutes a car pulls into the driveway and Ryan stands up, slinging her bag over her shoulder. She waves the car over to them before she turns to look at Keltie. “I’ll see you tomorrow then,” Ryan says and there’s a faint pink blush rising along her cheekbones as she strides down the stairs and to the car.
It’s only when Ryan is leaving that Keltie notices that there was a boy in the driver’s seat of the car.
The next day Keltie is waiting outside on the stone steps, sitting in the same place Ryan was yesterday maybe some part of her is hoping she can absorb some of Ryan’s quiet beauty. The same car from yesterday shows up and Ryan’s in the passenger seat, the same boy as yesterday night occupying the driver’s side.
Keltie’s stomach drops and her fingers curl tight around the strap of her bag. The boy, he’s cute and he says something to Ryan that has her giggling. Little spikes of jealousy crawl around Keltie’s insides, trying to escape. Ryan leans over and presses a soft kiss to the boy’s cheek before she leaves the car.
Ryan spots Keltie and she smiles and waves and Keltie forces out one of her own. It’s not real but maybe her acting skills have improved? Ryan flounces up the steps and she’s standing in front of Keltie.
Keltie scans Ryan’s pretty face carefully, there’s a huge difference from today and yesterday. Today Ryan’s bangs are flat ironed and falling down into her eyes more than before. There also happens to be a thick, sparkling, deep purple stripe painted across Ryan’s eyes and the bridge of her nose.
“I’m not late right?” Ryan asks, “I told Spencer to take the shortcut but he thought he knew better and well, yeah,” Ryan finishes with a little giggle. Keltie fumes internally. The boy has a name. Spencer.
The blonde stands, she ignores the fact that she wore her good bra today, the one that makes her chest look bigger, the fact that she’s wearing eyeliner to dance class, the fact that she thought maybe her first instincts about Ryan had been right.
“You’re not late,” Keltie says, she smiles softly. “So, um…Spencer? How long have you two been together?” Just because she and Ryan will never be together in the way Keltie wants, it doesn’t mean that she can’t get an awesome friend out of this situation. Ryan’s dark brown eyes widen drastically and she breaks down into giggles, the same ones that make the blonde’s stomach flip-flop.
“Spencer and I are not together. He’s my best friend, since like diapers,” Ryan says, she reaches out and touches at Keltie’s shoulder, fingers brushing away a blonde ringlet. Keltie fights back the blush threatening to overtake her.
“Oh,” Keltie says, she feels foolish and excited and happy all mixed together. Her skin is warm from where Ryan’s fingers had brushed against it and she craves more, needs more of the girl’s touch. Ryan’s fingers linger on her before she suddenly pulls them back.
“I mean, so yeah, he’s single…I could give you his number if you wanted?” Ryan asks, her eyes are glued to the ground and she’s playing with her fingers again. A sign Keltie’s come to take as meaning that Ryan’s nervous. Keltie shakes her head, blonde curls bouncing slightly.
“Nah, guys aren’t really my thing to be honest,” The Keltie admits, she’s still grinning wide as Ryan lifts her head to stare into the other girl’s eyes. “What’s um…what’s your thing?” Keltie dares herself to ask. Ryan blushes, Keltie can barely see it through the outlandish make up but she can still tell.
“Honestly,” Ryan begins, she’s twisting her fingers again, the bracelets on her pale wrists jangling around. “Since I met you…I was hoping you could be my thing,” Ryan says.
Keltie grins wide and Ryan mimics her, perfect white teeth gleaming in the light of the day. Keltie’s fingers touch at Ryan’s cheek, barely daring to brush a little against the thick line of purple across the girl’s face. It smudges a little against the pad of Keltie’s finger but she doesn’t really have time to think about it before Ryan’s leaning in and pressing their mouths together in a chaste kiss.
Ryan’s wearing some kind of lip-gloss and it smears between them slightly. Keltie’s heels click against the stone as she moves a bit. She lets her hands touch at Ryan’s sharp hips that today are covered by a pinstriped black skirt. Their kiss deepens, the blonde girl’s tongue sliding into Ryan’s mouth.
Ryan makes a soft surprised noise and her arms slide up around Keltie’s neck, those glorious fingers, the same fingers that Keltie is now eager to put to good use, are playing with the ends of her curling iron styled ringlets. It’s not really a big deal if Ryan’s never been with a girl before. Keltie almost prefers it that way. She can teach the girl, show her everything, make it so no matter how this turns out, Ryan will never forget her.
They’re just two girls, two dancing clichés, and two people in love.
