Dr Owen Harper had no family to speak of, not in the traditional sense of the word.

No brothers and sisters, no parents, no cousins or aunts or uncles, no girlfriends, no one who needed informed of his untimely death.

His real family was there, able to recall each second in perfect detail.

The blast of the gun.

The crash as he hit the ground.

The second when each of their hearts skipped a beat, refusing to believe what their eyes were seeing.

Nobody could say how long they stood there staring; disbelieving what their minds were telling them was true. Even Ianto and his stopwatch could not accurately recall when Owen left…only that he was no longer here.

The only sound was Tosh’s heartfelt cries as she started to comprehend the events that had unfolded before her eyes.

As numb and as cold as they were nobody noticed the rain that had started to fall - as if the heavens were crying for the fallen warrior.

Jack moved first, bending down to gently close Owen’s eyes, an echo of shock still remaining. He shrugged off his coat and gently wrapped it around Owen’s lifeless figure. He tried to not look at Owen’s chest as he worked, the gaping wound a reminder of the sort of people they worked against, the people Owen had worked against. Ianto moved towards Owen’s head, helping to cocoon him in Jack’s coat; Jack raised his head as if to argue, he wanted to do this one thing for Owen on his own.

The protest died in his throat.

The tears running down his face were reflected in the man opposite him.

He watched as Ianto removed a tissue from the inside of his coat and gently wiped away the blood from Owen’s face - removing the stain from his porcelain skin. Ianto worked deftly, gently, as if mending a treasured doll, making sure that no more damage was caused. Ianto needed to help: he couldn’t just stand by and watch.

All of their gazes were locked on Owen, their fallen comrade and colleague.

Their friend and lover and brother and everything else he was to everyone- all of those things and more. They all knew the risks involved with this job, but that didn’t make it any easier to cope.

They were each lost in their own memories of him, still as statues in the rain.

The way he used to deliver presentations about the latest alien who had crossed their path.

Stolen glances across the hub when nobody else was looking.

Getting drunk and swapping jokes about a weevil, a cyberman and a telephone repairman.

Memories never to be repeated, but revisited often

Gwen was stood with her arms wrapped around Tosh, the rain and the tears merging so that there was just the one constant stream flowing down their faces.

Martha stood to one side, feeling like she was intruding on some private family grief.

They knew they couldn’t stay there forever.

Jack bit his bottom lip and locked eyes with Ianto. He nodded. It was time.

Together they gently lifted their precious cargo - getting ready to carry him home.

The team heard no noises, did not see the crowds of on-lookers part as they approached or feel the wind and rain lash at their sodden skin. There was only darkness, a hole in each of their hearts matching the one pierced in His.

Tosh, Gwen and Martha fell into step behind Jack and Ianto. Nothing mattered now: not the scene they had left behind them nor the bleak black days that were still to follow.

All that mattered now was the present…and Owen wasn’t in it.

Like it? Love it? Loathe it? Let me know :c)
