The Hub 2 Review - Saturday

Saturday
Most of Saturday morning was spent sitting around, waiting for autographs. Siobhan was adorable. She was really lovely and chatty, and a great way to start the convention. Ditto Eve. I love Eve and her new hair-do! She’s so happy and bubbly it’s infectious! She and Kai make a great double act. Their tables were next to each other and they were laughing and joking with each other all the way through.

Having read reports from the previous Hub convention and little bits about Eve in America, I sort of knew what to expect with Eve, Gareth and Kai. For Tom and Matt, however, I had no expectations. These two were definitely the highlight of my weekend. This is probably why I remember more about queuing for their autographs.

First up was Tom Price. My initial reaction to meeting him went something like this- “SQEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!” I love that man. His one-liners during the talk were very witty and fast. He also made my morning by commenting on my Hoodie. It was cold in the hall where the autograph signings were taking place, and I’m a wimp like that, so I kept my groovy Newcastle University PsychoSoc Hoodie on. Tom spotted the Uni sign on it and asked which one it was. He then started talking about one of his mates who went to Newcastle Uni and asked me what I thought of it and if I liked it.

And that man’s hair really is unbelievably fluffy! Within 20 seconds of meeting Tom, angelzbabe1989 and I had decided Tom was all kinds of awesome and immediately decided we were buying professional pictures with him.

Speaking of awesome, Matt Rippy is also adorable and should be encourage to talk at all times. It doesn’t matter what he says as long as he says something. His accent is even more gorgeous in real life than it is on the telly. Eve Myles agrees, she kept encouraging him to talk in the last group talk, just so she could drool over the accent. Her and 300 other people. Fortunately for fans of Matt, and his accent, he’s a right chatterbox. He was asking angelzbabe1989 and I questions while he signed our pics and afterwards as well. He asked where we were from and if we knew each other before the con. When we mentioned that we’d spoken on the internet but this was the first time we’d met properly, he told us a story about a similar group of people doing the same thing, who met up at one of the plays he was doing with the Reduced Shakespeare Company.

While standing in Matt’s queue angelzbabe1989 and I picked our sides in the great debate of the weekend: Gareth’s Hats- Love Them or Loathe Them? We both decided on a strong disliking and spent out time in the queue plotting different ways we could get rid of the hat. We rejected the idea of stamping on it and using it for Robin Hood Style archery practice in favour of hat napping, returning it bit by bit until we got three decent Jack and Ianto scenes in Series 3. Each episode of Series 3. We’ve got a long wait and a lot of hat; it didn’t seem like such a bad plan.

This signing also confirmed something I’ve always suspected- I have a thing for fluffy hair. Angelzbabe1989 and I started giggling and comparing who had the most fluffable hair out of the guests. We narrowed it down to a two-way fight between Tom and Matt, though Gareth’s is quite fluffy without the hats.

Note to angelzbabe1989- Google does not seem to have a definition of gigglier, it keeps changing it to giggle and giggler. I propose we campaign and get this word into as many conversations as possible.

My memory is already getting hazy about the weekend and it’s only been a week! Feel free to prod me if I’ve forgotten anything about Saturday morning.

Saturday afternoon was the first set of talks. Kai and Eve were up first, and as I’ve already mentioned they make a great double act. This talk also started one of many running themes for the weekend- Kai Owen and chairs. All of the guests had little wooden-chairs with black cloth on them- poor description, I know, but my head’s still aching with this cold- and Kai’s broke while he was sat on it. (Director's chairs! Thanks blue_fjords!) Cue much laughing on our parts and Kai being terrified every time he sat on a chair for the rest of the weekend. Very, very amusing.

Next up was Gareth David-Lloyd and his one-man mission- ably supported by a bottle of whiskey and Matt Rippy -to get across the Barrowman Line. The pair seemed to get on like a house on fire. The Barrowman Line cropped up quite a few times during the weekend, as did Matt Rippy, the MENTAL! American. Have I mentioned how much I love Matt Rippy? It’s lots. And lots. And he has mint hair.

I really need to get over this hair thing.

The only bit of boy!kissing during the weekend, occurred at the end of this talk and I, being me, MISSED IT! I’d turned around to say something to phoenix_angel89 who was sitting next to me when everybody started cheering. I turned back to the stage to see Matt doing some little dance thing. Only me. ONLY ME!

Any links to pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Next up was Tom and Siobhan. Again, I don’t really remember much, but I do remember them being really funny. I think this is where Tom Price recounted his story of how he’d been mistaken for a terrorist when standing on Tower Bridge, wearing a builder’s hat, as part of a friend's Stag-Do. I think that man could read the phone book and make it funny.

Everybody convened on stage for the last talk. Tom and Siobhan were the self-claimed sane ones, while Gareth continued on his bid to continually cross the Barrowman Line. Again, specifics elude me- I knew I should have kept a diary- but I do remember Eve drooling over Matt’s accent and Tom Price gazing lovingly at him while he spoke. I did take a photo of that but it’s really, really, blurry.

Saturday night was Carnival night and I wore the shortest skirt I’ve ever worn in my life with my Ringmaster outfit. Once again, Kai spent all night in the bar and Matt was holding session in the other bar- I don’t think he moved all night. He just kept talking to people.

Thriller came on again, so phoenix_angel89, angelzbabe1989 and I all jumped up to do the groovy hand-dance again. We didn’t last long. Gareth got up and started a dance-off with a guy dressed up as Fragments Jack- one of the best outfits I saw all weekend I might add. Straight after Gareth was handed the DJ’s microphone and started singing some heavy metal song- thing. Pheonix_angel89, who knows more about this sort of thing than I do- though that’s not saying much, my new Dalek moneybox probably knows more about that type of music than I do- confirmed that he was quite good. I just nodded along and pretended I knew what he was saying.

Once again, Saturday night was spent purely dancing by phoenix_angel89 and I, including doing the conga through both bars and the Freak Show section, when Is This The Way To Amarillo? came on. We all got some weird looks for that one.

I think that’s everything from Saturday, it’s certainly all I remember at the minute. Sunday shall follow tomorrow, along with some photos- I know I promised some scans of my autographs for people to look at- as well as some daft polls if anybody’s interested.

Edit: Yeah, no idea how I forgot this. Lets blame the exhaustion. I accidentally- stop looking so cynical- touched Gareth David-Lloyds arse when I was coming back from the bar on Saturday night. At least I hope it was his =S I accidentally knocked into somebody and he was the person standing nearest to me. I should not be this amused by this ;)
