[kingdom hearts] Heartbeats: Volume X

I have no idea why Riku is at Merlin’s house. Just go with it. And these were written a while ago. I don’t know why I never posted them. (Oh yeah, ’cause I don’t like them.)

Title: Dinner at Merlin’s
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Pairing: Riku/Aerith
Rating: G
Summary: All teenage boys have crushes now and again. [for prompt: unrequited, from harpie_siren at kh_request!]

Riku thinks he might have a thing for girls in pink dresses, and it is as relieving an epiphany as a disconcerting one.

But maybe it isn’t just the dress. It might have something to do with the kindness, the stubbornness, the willingness to put others’ happiness before her own. The ability to be everything Riku wishes he could be and everything he is not. Riku ponders these things while sitting across the table from one such pink-dressed woman in Merlin’s house.

“Don’t think too hard,” she says, her words registering a few seconds after delivery. “You might ruin your appetite.”

Aerith is chopping carrots for dinner and Riku’s eyes are drawn to her hands rather than her face. Her fingers are slender, a subtle line on her wrist showing where her arms tanned while gardening but her hands, gloved at the time, did not.

She finishes chopping another carrot and chuckles. “I know that look. You’re thinking about a girl, aren’t you?”

Riku leans back in his chair and concentrates on blank spot on the wall. “Well, you’re thinking about Cloud.”

It’s not such a wild guess. As far as Riku knows, Aerith is always thinking about Cloud - but that could be because he’s a sixteen-year-old boy, and he’s jealous. A quick glance at her face reveals a rosy glow on her cheeks; his stomach twists with the sickening knowledge that he’s right.

Aerith seems about to speak when Yuffie calls loudly from the kitchen. “Hey, Riku! Why don’t you stop brooding a second and come help with dinner!”

Cid barks out a laugh. “He’s not brooding, he’s flirting.”

Riku grumbles something venomous, feeling embarrassed and angry as his face heats up, kicks out his chair and marches into the kitchen. Cid is still laughing, but Yuffie winces at the expression on his face.

“Uh, Cid? For your own safety, don’t give him anything with a blade.”

Title: Dreams Are Not For Me
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Characters: Cinderella, Roxas
Rating: G
Summary: Roxas is ever watchful, never wishful. [for prompt: in my own little corner / i can be whatever i want to be, from de_yaten at kh_request!]

She was a Princess of Heart, so he could not touch her or interact with her, but he had fallen into the habit of merely watching. Her name was passed around from time to time in Castle Oblivion, usually in a sneering manner. Cinderella the Weak, Cinderella the Stupid, Cinderella Who Cooks and Cleans and Accepts Slave Labor and then Sings About It.

While the latter was true (and it was hard to watch her when she got carried off in a melody, for songs, driven by passion as they are, are things Nobodies don’t genuinely understand), Roxas thought the former were judgments of petty jealousy, or the residue of it. Cinderella was kind and loving. She had suffered through years of mistreatment, been a maid and serving girl, and had become a princess. She was simple only because her world was simple, built on bricks of black and white: those wicked were rewarded wickedly in the end, and those righteous were not.

Roxas was merely a spot of grey hovering in her peripheral vision, watching with mild fascination (and something like envy) as such a simple girl waded deeper and deeper into a not-so-simple world. But even after the Heartless came, and a boy named Sora bridged the gap between realities, her heart was pristine and uncorroded. It was full to bursting with hardheaded hope.

Once, Roxas dared to think it might just be big enough for two.
