Two weeks into training have been completed, 13 more to go! Woohoo! And after only two weeks I can see why its going to take us 15 weeks to learn everything. To begin with the NEW system they are using for processing commercial claims is DOS based. And I'm sure most people around here remember how touchy DOS can be, its like a woman, I swear to god. Sometimes everything works just fine, then for absolutely not reason it doesn't want to work. (Yes I just insulted my own gender) Agg!
So far we've learned the basics of the various programs we're going to be using, navigating the screens and what goes on them, insurance jargon, acronyms and so and so forth.
We've learned how to insert information to form a commercial quote and we've just leaned how to take a policy and turn it into a quote so we can mess around with it without messing up someones policy. Let me tell ya, one little thing can mean thousands of dollar difference, its crazy.
When we go out on the floor we'll get all our information from the underwriters, who in turn get information from the agents. So the only people I really have to deal with are my coworkers and the underwriters. Yay no customer interaction!!
My class is pretty cool, there's 18 of us in this little room where the air hits the back and the front is burning hot, so the people in the back freeze while the rest of us are sweating to death. Everyone in the class is pretty cool too, we have assigned spaces with computers (2 monitors each!!) because all our personal info has been mapped into them, or some such stuff. The girl I sit next to, Michelle, is pretty cool we have a lot in common with one another and we get along pretty well. Trainer Dan and Trainer Laura are cool too. They let us play hangman towards the end of the day and we do mini projects with presentations and they try to make it more interesting and they understand that reading some of the stuff in our manuals is pretty dry and boring. And if we have questions they tell us to "refer to your online manual, it is your best friend". The online manual tells you everything there is about what we do and how exactly to do it. (Literally, At the Command prompt type CKP. Press Enter. Press 4. Press 1.)
One guy has tourettes syndrome, and it can be interesting with him. He has some of the physical symptoms of it but by and large he's one of like 5% of all people with the syndrome that have this 'tic' sort of thing where they just blurt out obscenities. It can be fairly distracting sometimes, especially when its dead silent and he bursts out with "whore" or "bastard". He told us about it on the first day we were there so we could understand that it wasn't intentional or anything, but it can still be distracting when you're trying to figure out what you did wrong to make your quote off by $3k. We all try to be understanding about it, we know its not his fault and it annoys him more than anyone else.
The down side of this job is that its on the other side of town, I've put about 400 miles on my car in two weeks. I'm starting to look into apartments over in Dublin in hopes to cut down on gas, and it would be nice to be on my own. Mostly I want some place to decorate. ^_^
I'll get my first pay check next week, its about twice what I would have earned at JoAnns in the same period. Although taxes and soon insurance take their cut. Yuck. DAMN FICA.
Out of the 18 people in our class 6 of us are left handed. How weird and rare is that. Michelle my desk partner is left handed which works out great for us cause we're not bumping elbows when writing or anything.
Deanna was up here the other weekend for a baby shower. Now mum and dad are down in Atlanta for one or two more showers, I can't remember how many there are. I just can't wait for my niece or nephew to be born. Then I can spoil them rotten! Woohoo!
