Today in my Sociology of the South class we talked about collegiate football in the South, specifically at UGA.  In the early 1900s, college football was only at elite Northern schools like Yale and Princeton.  UGA's president at the time was a graduate of Yale and wanted to bring football to the school so that....

wait for it....

Students would have something do besides drink on the weekends.  Oh the irony.  At the time Athens was a dry county and students typically left on weekends so that they could drink, but the president thought that keeping them in Athens for football would stop that.
