So wow.
I wasn't able to go to the midnight party, but I was waiting at the doors at 8 the follwing morning. I then proceeded to finish the book by 3. That is while babysitting a soon to be two year old. I went to the bathromm once and at 3 energy bars, an apple and a glass of water. So, what did I think?
Well. I honestly thought it was very good, but I had the very odd feeling of reading a fanfic. I usually stick to my few favourites, but just before the book came out I was getting bored waiting so I started to read "The Psychic Serpent" or something like that. Not my ultimate favourite, but interesting nonetheless. The weird thing is that while reading HBP I became confused between the two and thought that Harry was learning to be an animagus (which he does not). Anyways, I thought their were a ton of similiarities between the two. Harry growing over the Summer, the jealousy between Hermione and Ginny and Harry and Ron. And most of all the growing interest in Harry from the other girls. Even so much so that Hermione utters a very familiar comment acknowledging this, and then never mentions it again. Also the odd behaviour she emits and that has Ron confused, but Harry notices.
Another thing was the way Harry became infatuated with Ginny. Now , in general I am a huge H/H shipper. Ever since I read Pou, my first fanfic it has been my canon. Seriously.
So I personally thought that the whole Ginny concept was introduced quite uncomfortably. She had a couple lines in a couple boring scenes and Harry was abruptly in love with her. I can understand this happening, but their actually relationship was not well done on JK Rowling's part, I thought. He kisses her. The next page they are dating and 2 pages later she is barely mentioned because they are barely seeing eachother because of exams. No dates, conversations or encounters are mentioned at all. Then Harry is off for his adventure with D-dog and quickly breaksup with her soon after. I didn't think she had a big enough part to hold up next to him and it was kinda dissapointing.
I was actually, honest to God laying on the couch writhing and screaming near the end at several parts. And yes I even felt a couple tears come at a very very sad part. BBut I actually thought the whole plot was very interesting well thought out. Everything entwining and working out .
The ending was so so so depressing. I am worried about Harry. So much so that for the rest of the day I walked around in a stupor, occasionally lapsing into silent thoughts. I was later watching much music out of boredom, as I could not focus on anything and the new Backstreet Boy song came on. It's actually an ok song, and sad that its sung by such losers. But I found the tune and words very fitting to the way I felt after completing the novel. Sad and empty, waiting incomplete.
Anyways, I thought the book was great, though written in a very different style then usual. Rowling has a ton of work ahead of her to complete all the loose story lines and to make sure the fans are satiated for eternity. I'm guessing it will be a long wait before we learn the rest of Harry's story.
