Thunder Bay State of Emergency Update
Thanks for the concern from everyone whose posted. Some of the rivers and lakes have receded slightly, however there's more rain forecasted for tonight and this coming weekend, so the city isn't out of danger yet. One of the local dams is threatening to break at some point today (In the small, outlying community of Stanley), and the roads to Kakabeka Falls are still completely washed away. The Ministry of Transportation is saying that it could take up to two weeks before the citizens of Kakabeka have the ability to leave.
The City of Thunder Bay itself seems to be reachable via land from Western Canada and Southern Ontario, however the main bypass through town (The Shabaqua Bypass as it's known to locals) was completely destroyed; Meaning that all traffic is being re-routed through the far north-end of town.
As promised, I found some information out about how you can help. The Red Cross has set up a reception centre at the Neebing Arena (Just outside city limits) and are working to help people find temporary accommodations; provide access to meals and transportation within the city. Local churches have also gone above and beyond their duties, and are providing food, clothing and shelter to those who require it.
If you're interested in donating, you can make donations through your local Red Cross organization, and specify that it is for the City of Thunder Bay, State of Emergency (Flooding) 2012. If memory serves correct, The Red Cross does provide tax receipts to those who make donations, so it can be a tax write off (For those who were concerned). I've attached some photo's to show the extent of the flooding. Please feel free to pass this around to your friends lists. Thunder Bay is my home currently, and it's just not right to see people suffering as much as some of them are. I know funds are limited for everyone, but even the smallest donation will help to change someone's life.
