Summary:You never know who you will end up with. Maybe that person is the guy who's you keep calling shorty or the guy that you label as dull guy. Yamada Ryosuke, the boy who's being voted as the most wanted boyfriend in his school find he was attracted to one of his classmate Nakajima Yuto, the boy who doesn't bother about others except his band and music.
Yamada’s eyes were on the glass window gazing at the street outside the café. He had his chin rested on his hand while skimming at the people passing by the window. Feeling bored with the view, he then shifted his sight around the café. It was a small but nice café with a few customers enjoying their lunch. He then noticed the two school girls sitting next to his table with their eyes fixed on him. Sometimes he could hear them giggling and talking while looking at him with a fascinated look on their face. He just nodded his head slightly when his eyes met theirs before he quickly changed his view.
Left with nothing else to do, Yamada then took out his mobile phone and scrolled down the message box. He pressed the button and reread the message that he got this morning from Takaki, just to be sure that he is at the right place. He was hesitant at first whether to meet with the older guy or not considering the thing that happen between them yesterday. But after giving it some thought, Yamada decided to agree with this meeting. Besides, Takaki had apologized by sending him a cake last night, so he was somehow confident Takaki won’t do anything fishy.
The thought of Yuto suddenly reappeared in his mind, causing his head to spin around. Out of everything, today seemed to be the most frequent day he meets him: in front of his house, during recess, pairing up for science project and even the end of class. It really hurts him to see Yuto standing so close to him yet so far from his reach. He knows Yuto hates him and that knowledge hinders him to tell the latter his feelings-the real one! Yuto thinks of him as an eyesore. That’s why he tries his best to avoid him and not to get in his way.
Yamada then took a gulp of iced lemon tea to wash down the throbbing pain in his heart. Slowly he put the glass down and took a deep breath as if trying to clear his head. The sound of bell ringing at the entrance door pulled his messy thoughts. He cranked his neck as he checked the guy who just entered the café. It was Takaki. He was wearing a washed out blue jeans, a printed Rolling Stone t-shirt with a round neck, and sunglasses as a complement.
Yamada curved a smile on his lips when he saw Takaki raising his hand letting him acknowledge his presence. Takaki walked towards Yamada, pulled the chair across the shorter guy and sat with his legs crossed.
“Sorry I’m late” Takaki removed his gray Giorgio Armani’s sunglasses and laid it on the top of table.
“Iie, it’s okay” Yamada said keeping a cute smile on his face.
Few seconds later, a waitress with a black short skirt uniform came and asked for their order. Takaki flip the menu a few times before he decided to order an iced lemon tea.
“Put a lot of ice in it okay? It’s really hot today” Takaki said as the waitress was about to leave. The girl nodded and walked away with a wide smile when she saw Takaki winked at her.
“What is it that you want to talk about?” Yamada asked after a while.
“Do you have a girlfriend or boyfriend?”
Yamada shook his head.
“So you’re single?”
He nodded. He started to feel weird with Takaki’s question.
Takaki leaned forward and took the glass of iced lemon tea that just arrived and sip it a little before rested the glass on his neck, trying to cool down the heat in his body.
Silently, Yamada just watched Takaki’s every move, and then,
“Why do you ask me those questions?”
Takaki put down the glass on the table and swept the water left on his neck as if enjoying the feel of cold water in his entire body.
“I like you” Takaki declared
Yamada knitted his brows when he heard Takaki’s statement.
“What?!” Yamada exclaimed, wanting to make sure if he heard it right.
“I like you, Yama-chan” this time Takaki answered more firmly.
“Like me? What do you mean you like me?” Yamada grew more confused.
“Ah… how do we explain this” Takaki paused for a while.
“Maybe ‘I love you’ would be the right words.” He continued.
Yamada stayed silent for a while as his mind tried to digest Takaki’s words. This is the first time a guy confessed to him!
“I-I don’t know what to say” Yamada replied with a puzzling look on his face.
Takaki chuckled when he saw Yamada’s cute reaction.
“You don’t have to say anything. I really like you ever since I met you. Whenever you are around, it seems like I couldn’t take my eyes off you. And I’m sorry for what I did yesterday. It’s just that I can’t control myself when I’m with you.”
Yamada looked straight into Takaki’s eyes and listened carefully to every single word uttered by the brownish haired guy. He doesn’t really know how he is feeing right now.
“Takaki-kun, don’t you find me an eyesore?” Yamada asked.
Takaki shook his head and thrust out his right hand before resting his palm on Yamada’s chubby cheek.
“You’re the most pleasant person I’ve ever seen and I don’t mind spending my whole day staring at your cute and lovely face” he stated.
Yamada felt his face burning when he noticed the girls seated next to his table stared straight at him and Takaki. Quickly, he leaned back on his chair, keeping a considerable distance between them. It was really weird because the moment Takaki touched his face, the same uncomfortable feeling he felt yesterday rushed before him. And in an instant, Yuto’s image came popped up in his mind, like an alarm clock reminding him whose touch he really is craving for.
“I’m sorry, again. Like I said I can’t control myself whenever I see you” Takaki brushed off his hair with his finger.
“It’s okay.” Yamada said forcing a smile.
“Will you go out with me?” Takaki asked.
Yamada pursed his lips trying to let out an answer but can’t seem to have one.
Noticing Yamada’s puzzled face, Takaki quickly said, “It’s okay, you don’t have to answer it now. Take your time and think about it”
Yamada nodded, “I will think about it. Thank you.”
Takaki smiled. He grabbed the iced lemon tea glass and gulp down what was left in it. The ice cube clank as Takaki put down the glass.
“I have to go now, would it be okay for you to go home alone?” Takaki asked.
“Yes, I’ll be fine. Don’ worry about me” he answered.
Takaki stood up, pulled out his wallet from the back of his jean and put the money on the table
“See you around” Takaki waved his hand and walked towards the door.
“Wait Takaki-Kun” Yamada shouted as he remembered something.
Takaki stopped and turn around, “What is it?” facing the former.
“Thank you for the cake last night” Yamada said.
Takaki frowned for a while but nodded his head. He waved again and walked out the café leaving Yamada behind.
---
“What do you think you’re you doing?” Takaki stopped walking when he heard a familiar voice from behind.
He turned his body and saw Inoo Kei leaning by the brick wall near the stairs he came down from. Slowly Takaki walked towards Inoo and,
“What?” Takaki asked curiously.
“With Yamada, what are you trying to do to him?” Inoo rephrased his question.
Takaki stare at Inoo observing him from head to toe. He’s wearing a button down white shirt and long olive-green chino with no single wrinkle on them and a black drawing holder sling over his shoulder. He had his black hair properly brush with a fringe hanging over his forehead.
He smile, “Nothing”
“Don’t lie to me, I know you well” Inoo voice sound dense.
“If you think you really know me, shouldn’t you be asking that question in which you already know the answer?”
Inoo gritted his teeth staring the older guy coldly.
Noticing Inoo’s irritation, Takaki stepped forward closing the gap between them. Carefully he took Inoo’s right hand and brought it closer to his lips. Takaki closed his eyes as he kissed Inoo’s every slender fingers like he was reunited with his most valuable thing which he long lost and found.
Inoo watched Takaki’s every move silently before he pulled his hand from the latter’s grip.
“I’ve told you before that this won’t work on me… not anymore”
A trace of disappointment was all over Takaki’s face. “But you always loved it when I do that to you” he reasoned
“It’s all in the past now. There’s nothing you can do to change it. I’ve moved on” Inoo declared
“Demo, Kei... I-” Takaki’s words were cut by Inoo.
“I’m not going to talk about the past. I’m here to talk about Yamada and Yuto”
Inoo folded of his hands and looked directly into Takaki,
“You know that they are in love with each other, right?”
Takaki nodded.
“Then you should leave those two alone”
Takaki only smirked hearing Inoo.
“They may have mutual feelings for each other but they unfortunately don’t know it. So I don’t think there’s anything wrong with me trying to date Yama-chan. Besides, it’s such a waste to let go of such a cute and lovely thing”
Without any hesitation Inoo grabbed Takaki’s shirt and shove him to the side of the brick wall,
“I’m warning you, leave Yamada and Yuto alone. Or else-“
“Or else what?” Takaki provoked.
Inoo let go of Takaki’s shirt and step backward “You don’t know what I’m capable of… not yet”
“Tell me, why do you care so much about those two?”
“Because I don’t want them to go through the same thing I’ve had. Their love is pure and they deserve each other. I don’t want people like you come between them and taint it”
“People like me?”
“Yes, people like you who don’t comprehend the meaning of love, who don’t know how to treat the person he loves you with all his heart, someone like you who enjoys crushing other people’s fragile heart. That’s what you are, Takaki Yuya”
Takaki pursed his lips and let Inoo’s every single word penetrate deep down into his heart. He didn’t even try to defend himself because everything that Inoo said about him was right. He is the type of person who can’t sit back and watch a beautiful and perfect thing pass by him without getting his hands on it. Every time he sees something like that, regardless what things that person possesses, he would always have an unexplainable urge to crush that person, just like what he did to Inoo.
Inoo thrusted his left hand into his Chino pants and took a deep breath,
“One thing that I can assure you if you still force yourself into Yuto’s and Yamada’s lives, I will leave DASH”
Takaki gasped hearing Inoo’s warning. That’s the thing he feared the most, losing him.
After making sure Takaki heard his statement clearly, Inoo turn away and left the older guy behind.
Takaki watched Inoo’s cold back fading away into the crowd.
“I still love you, Inoo Kei” completely aware that his word won’t reached Inoo, Takaki couldn’t help but let those meaningful words slip out of his mouth.

Yamada let out a heavy sigh, while his eyes are fixed on the ceiling of his bedroom. It’s been almost an hour since he has been laying down on his bed doing nothing but staring at the empty white ceiling. Bead of sweat starts to form on his forehead before slipping down, landing onto his blue sheet pillow. He stretched out his right hand and reach for the air-conditioner remote which lay on the bed side table. He then pressed the minus button with his index finger, lowering the temperature.
It’s been almost a week since school’s holiday started, and he knows as a student that this is the time he should be enjoying his life. But despite that, he can’t help but wish that the holiday will pass by quickly. The idea of spending a day without being able to see Yuto’s face really bothers him, even tough that taller guy clearly clarifies he hates him.
Yamada is perfectly aware of Yuto’s hatred towards him. But his yearning for Yuto has overpowers that fact. Even though Yuto hates him, Yamada didn’t stop himself from loving Yuto. If Yuto sees him as an eyesore, then he will just stand at the far most end of road and watch Yuto silently. Although all he could see may only be just a glimpse of that guy’s shadow, he is already content with that.
A sudden ring pulled Yamada back into reality. He picked up his mobile phone and look at the screen and saw his best friend’s name on it. He let it ring for a while before pressing the answer button,
“Moshi-moshi” Yamada answered half-heartedly.
“Moshi-moshi Yama-Chan” Chinen sounded loud on the other line
Yamada shift the phone to his right ear,
“Where are you?” Yamada asked as he noticed a noisy sound coming from Chinen.
“At the Red Cloth”
“What are you doing there?” Yamada asked curiously. Red Cloth is well known for its live band performances located at Shinjuku.
“Eh? Didn’t you know that DASH have their performance here today?”
Yamada shook his head, “No one told me”
“Not even Takaki-Kun?”
“No, Takaki-Kun didn’t say anything about DASH’ gig” Yamada frowned. He started to wonder why Takaki didn’t inform him about this.
Chinen stayed silent for a while,
“It doesn’t matter, they haven’t started yet. So you can still make it”
“I’m not going...” Yamada’s short reply.
“Why?!” Chinen raised his voice in wonder.
“Yuto hates me” Yamada kept his answer short. Even though right now his heart is screaming for Yuto, his conscious mind restrains him from making any move. Because he knows his presence there will be nothing but a bother for Yuto.
“Seriously, I really don’t get you guys. Why are you guys keep making things harder for both of you? Why can’t you just be honest with yourselves and tell each other how you really feel?”
“Because Yuto hates me! How can I say ‘I love you’ towards a person who despises me? And how am I even supposed to say it if that person can’t even stand looking at me?” Yamada’s eyes start to become watery.
Chinen let out a small sigh, he knows arguing with him won’t lead to any solution.
“ Anou ne, Yama-Chan, I had promised that person that I won’t tell you about this. But I guess keeping it as a secret won’t do any good for both of you. The person that gave you the cake on the day that you had a fight with Yuto… was Yuto himself”
Yamada eyes widened in shock, “Yuto?!!”
“Yes, I remember clearly how desperate Yuto was that night on the phone when he asked me your address. He didn’t told me what exactly happened, but he did say that he has hurt someone that’s really important to him, someone that he couldn’t stand a chance to lose. Correct me if I’m wrong, but as for me, it’s not something that you’ll say when you hate someone. Because if you hate someone, you wouldn’t be running desperately trying to reach out for that person”
Tears run down on Yamada’s cheek as he carefully listens to Chinen’s words. He tried to hide it by covering his mouth with his other hand while his shoulder was quivering. But every now and then, few sobs manage to escape from him and reach Chinen who stayed quiet.
After a while, “What time will the gig start?”
“Around 7 p.m”
Yamada looked at the clock on his bedside table. The digital number shows 15-minutes before 7 p.m.
