Okay, so this is a little more detailed.

It all began like this:

What if Sauron had gotten the Ring?

A question many fanficcers have asked themselves.  I mean, come on. It practically gets down on its knees and begs. It's the ultimate AU.

Which progressed to:

What if this happened due to unforeseen circumstances?

Pondering this was all kinds of delicious fun. In Sauron got the Ring, how did it happen? What sorts of forces, beings, plot-twists, and what all made this possible?

Which evolved into:

What if Sauron made a being when he made the Ring? What if this creature was bred of himself and the spirit he imbued into the Ring, bound to him, and they were of one mind? What if so long as one of this trio remained in existence, the other two would keep their tenuous grip on the world? What if no one knew about this? Or it was a dim and discounted rumor? It is said that Sauron was the greatest of all the Maia, and that no one knew the subtlety of his mind. Is it really such a reach to propose the idea of a creature that lies somewhere between genetic engineering and the Horcruxes of the Harry Potter series?

Then I read this article. And it completely changed everything.
