Today I decided to bow to conventional fashion demands and purchase a pair of black trousers to wear to the various grad school visits that are upcoming. You may find it bizarre that I don't already possess a pair of black pants; indeed, I do not and am most likely the only person in the universe who does not own such a pair. People (meaning my father, who vehemently dislikes my taste in clothes - keep in mind that this is a man who wears plaid shirts and denim jeans like it's a religion) find black trousers professional, sleek, and put-together. I absolutely HATE black in clothing form. I own the occassional shirt, tank top, or sweater in black, but that's about as far as I go and I only wear those rarely. I prefer bright colors, gray, dark brown, etc. So with that in mind, I headed out to the stores.
I traversed the mall in search of the perfect pair of black pants. I went to literally every store I thought would have a pair of black pants. All of them did. But NONE OF THEM fit well. Too tight in the waist, too big in the waste, too long in the inseam, shoddy fabric, too short in the inseam (which was the biggest problem, given that I stand at about six feet with shoes), whatever. I try on other pairs of pants - plaid ones, green ones, orange ones, blue ones, gray ones, etc. All of THEM fit and fit well. I even found the most hideous pair of pants I could find and THOSE fit. Just not the black ones.
This confirms my belief that people (read: most likely just me) are not meant to wear black clothing. It just is not flattering. Why wear black when you could wear something more exciting? Yes, I grant you, black clothing is nice on occassion - it does convey a certain type of mood...artsy, sexy, brooding, etc - but it doesn't usually say "Hey, I'm standing out from the crowd!"
So I think the grad school people are just going to have to accept me - sans black clothing. I will be professional, sleek, and well put-together...just without the aid of black. Yes, folks, that is right. I am going to challenge conventional fashion wisdom and NOT WEAR BLACK to an interview. Wahaha.
I bought a pair of green high heels and a striped sweater as I was leaving the mall. Take that.
