My matronly friend is a southern Woman. She is standing in search of the HMAS Sydney in Geroldton Western Australia. Behind us you see the "Dome of Souls" made up of 645 Stainless Steel Seagulls. The monument commemorates the loss of the of the Australian Navy cruiser in a gun battle with a German ship. This permanent memorial was dedicated on the 60 anniversary of the battle and sinking. For a long time the location of the wreckage was not known, hence, the statue of the searching mother.
I've been to this memorial twice. The first time was in 2005. When we returned the memorial had been expanded. In the intervening years the ship was discovered. When we returned in in December 2018 there was a reflecting pool with a single seagull. Engraved below the water was the Longitude and Latitude of the ship.
