The following week on Wednesday, Adam and Kris met with an agency that specialized in helping homosexual couples have children.  The lady, Ms. Michaels, which they met with, explained their options.  They could adopt a baby from the states or a foreign country in either an open or closed adoption.  They could also choose to have a surrogate mother carry a baby for them.  The baby would be the biological child of one of them and the surrogate.  She gave them a lot of information to look over at home.  They set up a meeting with her for the next week to discuss their plans further.

For the next week, Adam and Kris talked about their options every chance they got.  Kris was leaning toward surrogacy and Adam toward adoption.

“Why are you all for surrogacy?”  Adam inquired the night before their meeting with Ms. Michaels as they got ready for bed.

“I just think that it would be wonderful for you to have a biological child.  I mean that baby would be half you like Karis is half me.”  Kris explained.

“I just don’t know.  What are we supposed to do…pick some random woman to carry our baby?  How do you even do that?  Is it just some baby farm or something?”

“Adam, Ms. Michaels, told us that they carefully screen all the women and they only allow them to be surrogates so many times.  Most of the women that they have aren’t even doing it for the money…They are doing it to help a couple who isn’t fortunate enough to have a child on their own.”

“Adoption just seems so much easier.”  Adam spoke climbing into bed.

“We can adopt the next one.”  Kris replied with a smile as he snuggled up to Adam.

“The next one?  Exactly how many children do you think we’re going to have?”  Adam asked as Kris leaned into to kiss him.

“I was thinking maybe an even dozen.”  Kris responded with a laugh as he leaned in even closer.

“That many?  We’re not the Jolie-Pitts, you know?”  Adam said as he nipped at Kris’ lips.

“I know…We’re way hotter than them.”  Kris whispered mischievously before pressing his lips to Adam’s lips.

When they met with Ms. Michaels, she seemed happy with their decision.  She explained the process of surrogacy to them in greater detail.  She also answered all their questions.  She sent them home with information to access the database of potential surrogates through the agency’s website.  She told them to narrow it down to a few women and then she would set up meetings with them to make a good fit.  Adam was still skeptical but he kept his opinions to himself as much as possible.

Over the next few days, Adam and Kris looked over the profiles of all the potential surrogates.  Even though Adam was still unsure of the whole thing, he did agree with Kris on some of the candidates.

“So what’s new?”  Allison asked Adam as she sat down on the couch one afternoon.

Allison Iraheta was his best friend.  She knew everything about him, but he had yet to tell her about the baby plans.  They hadn’t told anyone, but Adam needed to tell her.  He had to talk about it with someone besides Kris because he felt like he was going crazy.

“This has to stay just between us.”  Adam told her as he sat in the chair across from her.

“Of course.”

“Kris and I decided to have a baby.”  Adam spoke quickly.

“Wow!  That’s awesome!”  Allison squealed as she jumped up and hugged her friend.  “How are you…I mean, what are…”  She stumbled over the question.

“Well, that’s the thing.  I wanted to adopt.  Kris had his heart set on surrogacy, so I could be the baby’s biological father.  We’ve agreed on surrogacy, but I’m still a little on the fence about the whole thing.”  Adam explained.

“Why?”

“Kris and I have been looking through the profiles of all these women and it just somehow still feels wrong to randomly pick someone to carry my baby.  Kris thinks that it would be wonderful for me to have a biological child like he had Karis, but that was totally different.  He was married to Katy.  They were going to spend their lives together and raise the baby together.  A surrogate makes me feel like I am using the woman.  It’s like ‘Can I rent your uterus for nine months because I’m a man who is married to another man and we want a baby but that’s physically impossible for either of us.”  Adam rambled.

“These women know what they are getting into.”  Allison interjected.

“I know, but I’m still so unsure.”  Adam huffed leaning back in the chair.

“Have you talked to Kris about any of this?”  Allison questioned as she took a seat on the arm of his chair.

“No…not really.  He’s so happy about the prospect of having a little me running around that I don’t want to disappoint him.”

“Well, would it make you more comfortable if you knew the surrogate?”  She asked placing her hand on his shoulder.

“We would get to know her a little before choosing her and more over the course of the pregnancy.”  He told her.

“No, I mean if she was someone that you already knew…a friend or something.”

“I don’t know.  It might, but who would we even ask to do something like that?”  Adam spoke looking at Allison.

“Me.”  Allison declared sincerely looking him right in the eyes.

“Alli, you can’t be serious.  That’s too much to ask of you.  It’s…”  Adam replied quickly as he placed his hand on her knee.

“You’re not asking…I’m offering.  You’re my best friend, Adam.  You and Kris are amazing fathers, so why wouldn’t I want to do this for you?”  She explained placing her hand over his.

“I love you for offering, but there is so much to think about.  How would we explain to the baby about you?  Would you be mommy or Aunt Alli?  You’re our friend, so you’ll be around, but do you get like visitation or partial custody of the baby?”  Adam quizzed trying to be logical.

“We’d explain everything when the baby was old enough to understand.  He or she could call me whatever they wanted to or whatever you and Kris wanted it to call me.  As for everything else, you and Kris would be the baby’s parents.  I would give the baby up just like any surrogate.”  She enlightened him.

“I really don’t think that it’s a good idea.”

“I think that it’s an awesome idea and you know I always get my way.  Besides, I’m with Kris in this case.  It would be great to have a little you running around and with a little me thrown in the mix, it would be even better.”  Allison responded as she slid into Adam’s lap and hugged him.

“All right, you win.  I’ll talk to Kris about it, but we’re not going to rush into anything.  We all need to think this through.”

“I have thought this through.  I’m ready to do this for you and Kris…as long as I don’t have to have sex with you.”  She told him with a giggle.

“Adam just laughed at her.  Only Allison could make him laugh at a time like this.

“Did you and Alli have a good time today?”  Kris inquired when he got home that evening.

“Yeah, I guess.  We had a long talk.”  Adam answered as Kris leaned in and gave him a quick peck on the lips.

“You told her about the baby plans?”  Kris asked already knowing the answer.

“I did.”

“What did she have to say?”

“She offered to be our surrogate.”  Adam declared looking closely at Kris to gage his reaction.  He remained calm as he continued to look through his mail.

“Really?  What did you tell her?”

“I told her that I’d talk to you about it…That it was a big decision to make and that we should all think about it before we did anything.”  Adam stated.

“I know.  She called me after she left here.  I think she thought that you’d chicken out of telling me about her offer.”  Kris told his husband with a smile.

“Okay, if you knew all of that already…What did you say to her?”  Adam asked his husband.

“I told her that I thought it was a fantastic idea.  I know that you’ve been a little unsettled about us choosing someone randomly and truthfully, I have been too.  I just want us to have a baby.  I want you to have a biological child and I think this is the perfect solution.  We already know pretty much everything that there is to know about Alli.  She wants to do this for us.  I mean she really wants to do this for us.  It’s not like these other women who want to be surrogates for anyone.  She wants to be the mother of our child.”  Kris explained as he sat beside Adam on the couch.

“I know, but it could get very complicated.”

“Not if we don’t let it.”  Kris replied as he leaned in and kissed Adam’s neck.

“You don’t play fair, Allen.”  Adam breathed as Kris continued to kiss his neck.  Kris just smiled.  “All right…I’ll think about it, but if I do agree to it then the three of us have to sit down and talk about all the details before it goes any further.”

Kris moved away and smiled at his husband.  He knew that Adam was going to agree.  Despite all his protesting, he could see in Adam’s eyes that he wanted to do this.  Kris also knew that even though the situation might be a little unorthodox, the three of them could handle it.
