I've been listening to a mixture of Best Of 60s, Best Of 70s and Best Of Pop for several hours now. Almost forgot how emotional some of the old 60s stuff can be. "Three Times A Lady" by The Commodores almost makes me cry every time I hear it. *sigh*
It's not because of the lyrics, lyrics hardly ever reach me when sung. It just sounds so sad and beautiful. And I haven't heard it in a while (well, before today, that is).
Then there's "You've Got Your Troubles" by The Fortunes. This one has almost the same effect on me. Especially the part where the two voices overlap. In case you don't know the song, here's a bit of the lyrics: "(...)And so forgive me if I seem unkind, you've got your troubles, I got mine./And it must seem to you, my friend, that I aint got no pity for you. Well, that aint true.(...) I'ld help another place, another time. You've got your troubles, I got mine."
I can relate to that. I sure have been in that position more than once. In fact, it appears to me that this happens quite often to me. Just that in my case, instead of concentrating on my problems and neglecting those of other people, I kind of concentrate on their problems and try to ignore my own. Because that's easier.
That's probably why I like fiction so much. In fiction, you can always solve all the problems if you want to. In my comic strips, I find it hard to leave any problems unsolved. Bad things happen there, too, but it's up to me to decide how the characters deal with them. Even if they can't change something, they can always change the way they feel about it.
You know, I never liked that psychological theory about how you can tell if someone thinks positive or negative by asking them if the glass is half full or half empty. That theory never worked for me, it's full of flaws. For a start, there's not just "half full" and "half empty". It depends on how the person thinks about this fact. Is it, "Oh no, my glass is half empty, half of my drink is gone already" or is it "Hey, it's only half empty, I can still look forward to enjoying the other half"? And then, of course, it depends on the tastyness of the drink, the situation (is it safe to use the toilet if you need to?) and several other factors. So that's psychology for you.
Oh well. Time to go to work now. Maybe I'll find myself another nice message-in-song when I return. In the meantime, I'll continue doing what everybody else does: Ignore the facts and pretend. Pretend everything's fine. The world is still in motion, nothing happening anywhere. Well, maybe one day, I'll believe it.
