Prompt: "Human kindness has never weakened the stamina or softened the fiber of a free people. A nation does not have to be cruel to be tough."
Sam Seaborn was spending the weekend in his office, working on a speech that he had felt as Deputy Chief of Staff he was not able to delogate. The speech was important for the people in the country and around the world. On the Sunday he had still ignored the spare clothes he kept in his office, his Friday suit was crumpled from sleeping in the floor and the wastepaper bin was close to overflowing with takeaway coffee cups and the floor was littered with crumpled sheets of discarded paper. Contrary to appearance he was not suffering his worst case of writer’s block. He was just too furious about what angle he was supposed to be writing to produce anything that was better than third rate.
While the television blared a report on the war that had begun the two term Santos presidency , Sam prowled along the books on his shelf looking for inspiration. He took a book down off the shelf of former president quotes and it fell open at his favourite one ‘Human kindness has never weakened the stamina or softened the fiber of a free people. A nation does not have to be cruel to be tough’. Franklin D. Roosevelt had put it right Sam thought turning to glare at the television. The President had forgotten it somewhere along the way. He was sending more troops in rather than negotiators and somehow he had to spin it. Sam felt that with all the policy changes it was hard to tell whether he was working for a Republican or a Democrat.
He brought the book to the desk and put his head in his hands. “I can’t write it,” he said out loud to no one in particular.
“What can you write then?”
Sam looked up to find Josh, CJ , Donna and Toby standing in his doorway. If he hadn’t been quite so stressed he would have seen that they looked like all their Christmases had come early. As it was he was too out of it to even question what they were all doing there. “We are a strong nation with values that we uphold. When we see an injustice in the world, our instinct is to reach out and help. While we must be tough on those who seek to do people harm and stop people’s freedoms, we must not become like them in the process. In light of this, we are going to re-open peace talks.’
The four in the door looked at each other and grinned (or half smiled in Toby’s case). “It’s a little rough,” Toby acknowlged, “But it’s a good beginning...”
“Do you think he’s ready?” CJ asked coming to take a seat in Sam’s office.
“Ready for what?” Sam asked confused and straightened his glasses to look suspiciously at his friends.
“To announce your candicacy for President of the United States,” Josh said with a smile that become rare as Santos had not proved to be quite the President he had thought he would be. . He crossed the office to Sam and said softly, “You’re our man Sam.”

Prompt: Josh/Donna, roses
It took Josh two weeks to notice there were always roses on Donna’s desk. He probably wouldn’t have noticed them then if they hadn’t been sitting on a report from Sam that he had been hunting for while Donna was out for lunch. “Donna what the hell?” he called out, expecting her to appear out of thin air.
“I think that only works when she is in a five mile radius,” Sam said appearing in her spot.
Josh pointed at the flowers, not willingly to be sidetracked until he had solved the mystery of the flowers or they miraculously disappeared. “She’s starting a garden in here,” he said.
“That would be her mystery lover,” Sam said coming to stand beside Josh. “I heard Bonnie talking about him. He’s been sending fresh ones every day.” He put the roses into water and shoved the report below it into Josh’s arms. “Meetings in ten,” he said cheerfully.
Josh groaned, “I don’t suppose you could give me the finer details on the way?”
“Happy to,” Sam said and fell in beside Josh.

The roses continued to arrive. By the fourth they were really irritating Josh, all the more so because Donna’s face lit up every time they arrived. He had considered putting a ban on floral deliveries to all staff but as Sam had pointed out over a drink that was a little bit too petty even for him. At another low point during a long budget meeting, he had considered finding the man who was sending them and proving what a jerk he really was. Today, he was considering presenting her with a bouquet of roses, just to out do the man and stop Donna obsessing.
“Oh for Pete’s sake,” CJ said when she caught him still staring moodily out at the roses when she walked in half an hour later. “Ask the girl out already Joshua.”
Josh jumped, stared at CJ for a long second and coloured. “I’m just pissed because they are distracting Donna from her work and therefore distracting me.”

During the fifth week, the man behind the flowers proved to be Anthony, a guy who saw Donna most mornings in the line for coffee. Typically, Josh hated him and didn’t want to hear a word about him. However he didn’t act until Donna had been seeing Anthony for two months and everything was going well for her. He bought a bonsai tree and left it on her desk before she came in in the morning with a note attached saying ‘dinner tonight just you and me’. Like the coward he was when it came to women, he retreated to lean in his doorframe to watch Donna’s reaction from there.
****
Donna hated roses at least the ones with the thorns still attached. She was getting tired of their constant presence and Anthony’s clinginess. Not that she was going to admit that to anyone, Josh would only glow with triumph and she couldn’t stand to see that. She folded her coat over her chair and spotted the Bonsai tree, how had Anthony known she had always wanted one? Maybe he wasn’t so bad after all. Slowly she turned over the tag and recognised the untidy scrawl. Confused she looked towards Josh’s door and caught sight of his slightly scared, slightly hopeful face. She nodded. Anthony was forgotten in a heartbeat. Even one date with Josh was better than a million dates with another guy.

Prompt: Gibbs/DiNozzo, "I know you blame me for what happened to Jenny. You're right to."
They didn’t talk while Tony was reassigned unless it was to talk shop. Tony couldn’t face speaking to Gibbs about Jenny or seeing his disappointed and sad face on the video feed. As Gibbs didn’t try to make any contact with him or try to get him back to the office immediately that he blamed him for Jenny’s death. He was being punished twice over by Vance and Gibbs, and it felt much worse coming from Gibbs. However he took the punishment like a man about from his mostly jokey ‘GET ME OUT OF HERE’ stir crazy moments because he blamed himself too.
When he got back, he kept his head down DiNozzo style - all jokes, laughter and women. But the Boss being the Boss hauled him off to one side (jerked his head to indicate where he wanted Tony). “What is your problem DiNozzo?”
“I don’t have a problem Boss unless you count Probee’s latest haircut,” Tony quipped back quickly.
“DiNozzo,” Gibbs said and Tony heard a fair bit of command and emotion in that. He looked startled as Gibbs took a step towards him and locked eyes with him. When Gibbs did that, the world ceased to exist apart from Gibbs. He swallowed, “Look Boss I know you blame me for what happened to Jenny. You’re right to. I screw..”
Gibbs put a hand on Tony’s cheek. “Stop beating yourself up,” he said. “I don’t blame you. I’m glad you’re home.”
Tony smiled his first real smile since he had come back, “Me to Boss.” And with that they went back to work. The working day drifted on and the rest of the team slowly dispersed to their various homes until Tony and Gibbs were the only ones left in the office. Tony slowly shut his computer off and...
“DiNozzo, gear up.”
Tony groaned, who wanted to deal with a dead marine last thing at night. However as he stood up with his coat he met Gibb’s half smile as he amended what he said, “Gear up, we’re going back to mine.”

Prompt:Macavity/The Rum Tum Tugger, mastermind
There was something in Macivity’s low and dangerous purr that had always brought Tugger to his brother’s feet. It spoke of nameless terrors and of pleasures than he shouldn’t even begin to contemplate. It symbolised how he felt about his brother - love and hate entwined to the point that Tugger could barely tell them apart. But no matter what he felt, he had to admit, Mac was a genius at coming up with plans.
Mac’s latest had begun to form a month ago when the two brother’s came over on one of the big liners from State side. But Tugger was only hearing about it now that the details had all been thought out as they lay with Mac curled around him in their downtown den. Mac had been clever, Tugger was not a fighter unless the situation really called for it and, he had given him the job of collecting information and gaining the trust of the Jellicle cats.
“You are brass enough to do it,” Mac concluded, “And when I triumph,” he purred into Tugger’s ear, pressing close, “You will be well rewarded.”
Somehow Tugger didn’t think it would be hard to pretend that he hated Mac for awhile. He sighed inwardly, Mac was probably counting on that. It never did any good to fall for a mastermind who felt no real emotion for anybody.
