Headcanon!

fact fact fact
-> headcanon!

Kitchel never talks about her family in the series and when she's first introduced as a preteen she's already very comfortable living on the streets in a child gang.
-> Kitchel can't remember her parents but this doesn't bother her. It's just not one of the things she thinks about. She had a secure childhood anyway, as the older kids took care of the younger ones and the whole thing was similar to siblings in a more conventional family.

Kids in Kitchel's gang (and in Thatz', her rival's) spent a lot of time at one bar/restaurant in the business district. She dropped in to say goodbye to the bartender before leaving the city for the first time and she and Thatz spent a lot of time there when they were working together later in the series.
-> I have a shitton of headcanon about the man who ran this place, actually. His name was Lemure, as the place is canonically named "Lemure's", and he acted as a replacement father to the many street kids in the area. He is shown to help them get food and work, either by hiring them to clean and wait tables or by giving them tips on where they could find either another job or treasure. He knew they were all engaged in petty thievery and it didn't bother him; they needed to survive somehow. Canonically he used to be an adventurer in his youth and I think he was the one who gave Kitchel the idea to break into the Dragon Castle, thinking rightfully that she would be hired for her skills. He certainly had an idea when he told Thatz the same thing. All in all she's very fond of him. When she was younger she would sit at the counter and talk to him while he ran the bar, telling him all the secrets a thirteen year old girl has. After the series ends one of the first things Kitchel does is head down to see him. She expected him to make it through the fighting all right, although she is surprised to see the extent of the damage to the building. She's very glad he wasn't hurt.

Not all of the things in Kitchel's backpack are magical or expensive.
-> Somehow I've decided a while ago that one of the things she carries around in there is a first aid kit. She gets a little roughed up in canon but nothing that really bothers her and it's all during moments when she really can't stop to think about it. Kitchel has a tendency to worry more about her friends than about herself, assuming that of course she'll be all right. If one of her friends had gotten hurt, she would have been a lot more worried and would have wanted to help. And she has pulled stranger things out of her bag before. It's really not much of a stretch.

The series originally had Kitchel paired off with Thatz. It later changed so she was with Tetheus.
-> Kitchel did like Thatz for a window of time, although she wouldn't agree with this statement. They had managed to go from rivals to frenemies to actual friends while working together and when he grabbed her as their boat fell apart it made her heart stop for a moment. If he had gone into the caves with her, maybe things would have turned out differently. As it was, her feelings for him weren't so developed that they could last without more reinforcement and when Tetheus showed up whatever still lingered evaporated. When she was younger, she had liked Thatz too, in the way that little girls and boys do. It wasn't anything that special; it just fueled the name-calling and prank-pulling on both sides. For Thatz' part, his feelings matched up pretty neatly with hers. He had a confused sort of crush on her when they were children, then started to like her more maturely when they were on their adventure, then, when they separated from one another, he moved quietly on. He's more perceptive about this sort of thing than she is, so when they met up again he knew she had moved on as well and it was strange, not entirely in a good way. It doesn't take them that long to build back up to proper friend status after the series ends.
