Calling All Fandoms -- just a curiosity
I don't care what the fuck your fandom is, it could be goatfucking and I don't care I just want am curious about any fandom of any type and their preferences when it comes to their ships. I was inspired by isiscaughey who basically was talking about how a friend of hers and she, despite having similar tastes in fandom, have completely opposite shippings.
So basically my question to you guys is what kind of ships do you go for? Is there any rhyme or reason with your ships? What exactly do you look for in a ship anyway? I'm just wondering, that's all. There's different reasons for everybody and it just interests me to see what the reasons are. There's some who go by the book solely, there's some who just pick two people out of a hat and ship, there's some that just feel that their personalities mesh, others who enjoy a good rapport and chemistry, some who like the childhood friends = true love angle(which I used to love in high school but have grown to despise in 90% of the cases), then there's the "I like to try to gross as many people out at the same time" or the ever popular "I swear to god it started as just a simple joke and it evolved into a giant bowl of WTFlakes and now it's kinda one of my favorite pairings *guilty face*" which has happened to me before. Also don't be afraid to cite some pairings you like too.
What do I look for? I like when the characters have a good rapport and a good chemistry. I like the buddy-buddy feel but not biffle. Basically they're good friends and pretty close, but not close enough that if someone makes a move it fucks things up royally. I like the type that basically are the types that are in screwball comedies as well. I'm a sucker for great banter, comedic situations, and just a lot of snark. I also like it when there's an awareness between the two that others are talking and that there is somewhat of an attraction and they both know that the other knows but they never talk of it. Does that make sense at all? I just like that kind of feel to it. I enjoy romance a little bit, but it's gotta be real. And it surely helps if an inside joke is involved sometimes.
I also like when my ships have some evidence. It's not like the "look real closely and you can see that he's touching her hand" way but like there's some legitimate evidence or material to support your ship. The pairing doesn't ever have to happen but at least give some sort of material to support your claim people. Also I don't like the "Hey they grew up together/got traded together/etc -- TRUE LOVE!" angle. That angle is annoying and stupid and makes my head hurt. Honestly, do you imagine yourself marrying the boy down teh street you used to make mud pies with and has seen you through your most awkward stages in life? I mean if you do and all, more power to ya. Personally I couldn't.
My thing is that a pairing for me just needs to have a good rapport. Oh and a good sexual tension too. Like a feel that the bickering or the talking that they're doing is subtext for buttsex or or fucking or whatever else(what? It's an anagram! I always wanted to say that). This sometimes falls into the "worst enemies but god they're so attracted to each other" angle too. I'm not one for angsty pairings. I do have a few angsty pairings but I prefer to keep mine lighthearted. Why? Because it's fandom dammit. It's not life or death and as one person once wisely put it "Fandom is fucking funny"
I also have to confess to having a good chunk WTFlakes Pairings. They start as running gags or you just randomly think of them and it just keeps staring you in the face. Basically I think almost all my MLB pairings happened this way in one way or another. However with some of my WTFlakes Pairings, I still get some support of some sort no matter how randomly fucked up it may be. As they say though, "Fandom IS fucking funny" so why get all serious about pairings?
