I just need to get this off my chest. My dad is basically being a tard and treating the fact that the Red Sox not winning the division is a failure. This pisses me off and I think I nearly exploded at my dad last night like...three times. I did have that sharp sardonic sort of voice that's chock full of attitude but not really bad. I mean it sounds like he'd rather just choke the playoffs altogether than win the Wild Card. Seriously, is this how Red Sox fans are acting because if so, I'm just gonna say that I'm extremely ashamed.
Basically when I'm talking of dumbshit fans THIS TIME, I'm talking about the fans who are considering it a failure if the Red Sox don't win the division. This is the stupidest and most annoying claim ever. You see the problem with baseball fans is that sometimes they don't look at the CONTEXT of the situation and only look at it superficially. Superficially you see "Oh the Red Sox are doing good BUT they aren't winning the division so the whole season is made of fail" but those people are tards in my book anyway. You see the important thing is just GETTING THERE. I mean do I want teh division? Yeah, who doesn't? But the fact of the matter is that just GETTING THERE is huge. They're one of the 8 best teams in the MLB, 1 of 4 in the AL. Tampa Bay has played better...yes I am actually going to say that Tampa Bay is a better team than the Red Sox. WHY WON'T PEOPLE JUST FUCKING ADMIT THIS?! IT MAKES YOUR LIFE SO MUCH BETTER I SWEAR!! Tampa Bay is the better team this year and probably will be the next 5 or so years. But of course, just because you're the better team doesn't automatically make you ticketed for the World Series...that's why the playoffs are so made of awesome. But you know what? The Red Sox aren't a horrible team, but they aren't better than Tampa Bay or Anaheim California Los Angeles the Angels. Chicago is debatable at best. However, just because you're not the better team doesn't mean you can't win in the postseason.
Let's think about how this season has gone, when you look at the context. Okay first off you started the season in late March in a 12 hour time zone difference. You were in Japan to start off for two games. THEN you went back home and had three exhibition games against the Dodgers including one at that Olympic Stadium. More attention whoring and bells adn whistles. Keep in mind this is a Red Sox team that, unlike the 2004 team, is not big on the whole attention whore game...okay there's Papelbon but that's Papelbon. These guys would rather play baseball. So then you had those three games and two more in Oakland. After that it was to Toronto where basically everything went to shit. It's called Jet Lag people. You ever tried to get through days with Jet Lag? When I went to San Diego had the Jet Lag in which I went to bed at like 8:30pm every night and then woke up at like 7am the next day. Then when I went home I was a night owl for about a week because of the time zone fallout. It happens. Then it was back home and you had some long stretches of baseball in the next two months which, I'll be honest, I thought they were gonna crash and burn. They didn't though. They actually did pretty good in that time. Then you had the Zombie Death Flu and the Injury Bug making players drop like flies for moments in time. I think about half the team had either one or the other. Yeah, not very good. Then you lost Papi for a month and a half. And I haven't even gotten to teh whole Manny thing and the second wave of the Injury Bug. That has depleted some bitches too. I mean I'm just amazed at the fact that they're even most likely gonna end up in the playoffs, let alone playing well. That's just a testament to the depth of this team.
How had they been able to even keep afloat with this stuff? Guys stepping up and some smart trades. Everybody had their moments in the sun. Pedroia has stepped up more than anybody else and is a candidate for AL MVP. Daisuke, even if his approach can be very inconsistent and maddening, has done an excellent job. Jon Lester has emerged into an ace. Josh Beckett has had his off year ace-wise but is stepping it up when it counts(though last night's start wasn't exactly a great one). Jed Lowrie has done a fine job and has made us all wish for Lugo to stay on the DL for a looooong time even if he sucked last night. Jason Bay has done a great job and while he may not have made us forget Manny he has done a pretty damn good job in his place. Kotsay and Byrd were two great deals made from Theo in the August waiver wire and have done well in their roles. Coco Crisp has stepped it up too and has hit better than he ever has with the Red Sox. Justin Masterson made some fine spot starts when needed and is now in the bullpen and a very stabilizing force. Javier Lopez has been an unsung hero in the bullpen as well. Kevin Youkilis has emerged as a great power threat adn JD Drew had an amazing June and was doing well before his back threw out.
So basically my thoughts I'm trying to drive home here is this: Appreciate the season for what has been accomplished and not what hasn't been accomplished. I mean, let's be honest here, I don't think the Red Sox will make it to the World Series. I'm not even sure if they'll make it to the ALCS...but they've made it to get the CHANCE and all things considering, it's quite an achievement. That's all I wanna say....now I need to go and blow off some steam before I do a pregame entry and talk about How I Met Your Mother. :P
