An Open Letter to Mike Timlin

Sep 13, 2006 00:01

Dear Mike Timlin,

Hey man, wassup? I know, I know, you're all grumbly and shit from your sudden bouts of suckage. There's been a lot of things wrong with you. Well you were injured and had a dead arm, likely an aftereffect from pitching in the WBC, you said some things out of frustration and got twisted into being a selfish ass, which I know isn't true, but next time watch where you say this ish. And most of all, you're sucking pretty horribly. You're not used to this at least as of late. Your pitching isn't what it used to be and well, it's rather sad to see, because I still like you in spite of all fo that for the things you've done before.

And that is why I'm writing this letter.

Mike, there comes a time for everybody to retire, you can usually feel it when it happens. You know when the time is right. It comes to you somehow, whether it be an injury, suckage, or just...feels like the right time, there's a time for everybody to just smile at the memories and walk away. I think your time has come, Mike. You got some kids who are growing up quickly right before your eyes. Your son is now, like what? 10? He's gonna be hitting teenagerdom soon as you know it and your daughter is getting up there too. I think now is the time to just pick up your gear and fade to black. You've done a lot of things in this game, man, and you defied everybody's thoughts of you. They said that you didn't have guts in Baltimore...you showed them. You were consistent and a complete rock in the bullpen for Boston from 03 until now, you have three World Series rings. You've done a lot...and I think now is the time to just be thankful for playing in this game for so long and just hang em up.

Think of the things you can do after retirement. No matter how 06 ends for you, you'll always be 1 of 25 here, and an important factor too. You'll have it made in the New England area, and as long as you don't blast your way outta here or you don the pinstripes, you'll be just fine. You can probably come up here for offseason stuff, maybe even some analyst work like McCarty does for NESN. Or, if you really want to, I'm sure there can be a place in the bullpen for you...as a coach. You've mentored the youngins Delcarmen, Papelbon, and Hansen very well and your guidance will be needed in those times of trouble. They look up to you, and you know, being a bullpen coach could be pretty spiffy. They're gonna need somebody to look up to and help them out. I think you can do that.

Or if you choose to not retire and wannar each that 1,000 game mark, then why not go to San Diego or Los Angeles, the preferred retirement homes of all former Red Sox players :P I prefer San Diego. Weaker lineups and old friends including Dave Roberts, Alan Embree, Mark Bellhorn, and the like. But personally, I think it'd be nice to just be thankful for lasting this long and just walk away....every good cowboy needs to walk off into the sunset...it's your turn, man. And if Papelbon yells out "COME BACK MIIIIKEYYY" dont' go back...it's heartbreaking to leave, but it's for the best.

So please Mike Timlin, retire after this season for the good of yourself and Red Sox Nation. Don't be like Roger Clemens, man....retire with grace.

With lots of love,
