I'd like to bring up a quote from Art Martone, from ProJo to introduce this entry
It's over the long haul, the day-to-day grind, where the truth is told.
And that's why baseball's not a sport best told through 10-second highlight clips. If it were, the inevitable 420-foot home run from Red sox backup infielder Alex Cora sometime this year would convince us that Cora -- who averages six homers a season -- is a terrific power hitter
This is basically how I feel right now with this team. Just merely a bump in the road. I'm disappointed in last night and still very angry about it, but I'm not going to let it get to me. Because you know what? This isn't the true Red Sox. The true team is somewhere around the place, but it's not this team right here. I'm not panicking yet, but I'm not very amused at their way of play either.
Baseball's a funny game, any day, anybody can come in and step up to be a hero. While we're all used to the David Ortiz Heroics, sometimes, there's other guys that come in. Take May of 2004 vs the Mariners. The Red Sox blew the lead, on Keith Foulke's first blown save that season. Not only that but Schilling seemed to fall apart at the seams before that. Our two big guns had faltered. But then, suddenly three men rose up and took charge...three guys you'd never expect. The first one was Kevin Youkilis, who was then only just a rookie who took over for Bill Mueller during his knee injury. Youkilis, with two outs got a clutch hit to bring the Red Sox down by one. The next batter, was of all fucking people, Andy Dominique. This was a guy we called up to back up for 1B, having had gaudy numbers in Pawtucket. He had only like two other at-bats before this one....I must say, he had perfect timing all around to finally get his first major league hit. And so he did, and the tying run scored. The final guy, and probably one of the most unlikely stories, was David McCarty. In the 12th inning, he blasts a walkoff homer into the centerfield bleachers. I remember going McCARTY?! ARE YOU FUCKING SHITTING ME?! It was unreal, but that's the way of baseball, you never know who'll step up. Hell, we saw guys like Adam Stern and Mark Loretta come through with some mad clutchiblity whether it be flashing the leather or getting that big hit.
I guess what I'm saying is that anybody can step up and be a bit of a hero to the team, Lenny is pitching tonight, so I say, why not Lenny? He had a real clunker the outing before, but his outing before that was very good. Lenny needs his first major league win, anyway...why not tonight? Why not now? The bats are in a coma, I know, but they can wake up at anytime, and I say why not tonight? They square off against Doug Waechter, On the DL's unofficial mascot(long story). They can do this shit up, I mean why the fuck not? Get those bats asploding and keep it going into tomorrow...which if there's no fight on Sunday, I will be SHOCKED for it is Schill vs Kazmir.
Yeah I'm all "Kumbaya" and all that bullshit, but mehh, it's April anyway. Just relax and kick back. It's a long season, we'll see how this measures up once the season's through. Meanwhile the PawSox open up their series w/ the Ottawa Lynx tonight at I believe 6:05pm. I'll keep the Sternie/prospect watch going.
