EPILOGUE

Everyone had something to say about what happened the night of The Dueling Cavalier premiere, but it was all eventually forgotten. The movie brought in money and more viewership, no matter what people thought of Jack’s sentimental speech. The public moved on, as it always did, on to the next sensation. Oh, they could never forget entirely about the Jack Harkness, but they left him in a relative peace. Rumors died down, crowds didn’t turn into mobs.

Jack made it easy for them, too; his life became less riotous. He had a beautiful and full life, but it didn’t involve parties and clubs and a rotating group of bed partners. His life consisted of work, friends, charities and Ianto, a great deal of the former and more of the latter. After the reviews came in, it was clear that Ianto needed to do at least a few guest spots on the show, which he did under the condition that it was only temporary.

Come the following winter, Ianto and Jack were settled together in Jack’s flat and the couple had started talking about expanding their four-legged family. It was a popular topic of conversation around the dinner table, especially when they had guests over.

“So, have you decided what breed you’re going to get?” Toshiko asked, as she accepted a glass of red wine from Owen.

“Oh, you guys don’t want to hear about this again, do you?” Jack insisted from his place at the counter beside Ianto, where they were piling food onto plates for the four of them.

“You two have been talking about this like you’re planning on having a baby,” Owen explained. “Besides, I’m looking out for Janet’s best interests.”

“Of course, Uncle Owen,” Ianto said with a smirk, “we’re so glad you’re our dog’s champion.”

“You just keep talking, Jones. Next time you need a babysitter, don’t come asking me and Tosh!”

“Have you two found a new flat yet?” Jack asked as they all sat down to dinner.

“Not yet,” Owen grumbled. “You think that it wouldn’t be so hard, but - ”

“But Owen finds something wrong with every place we go to,” Tosh finished.

“They haven’t been right. If we’re going to do this living together thing, we’re going to do it properly! And you didn’t answer the question,” he said to Jack and Ianto.

“We’ve decided to wait,” Ianto answered as he swirled his pasta elegantly around his fork.

“Yeah, we’ve had an offer come our way, actually, that will keep us busy for a bit.”

Toshiko looked at them warily. “Is this why I had a call from both your managers today?”

“Yes,” they replied together.

“I want to get back on stage,” Jack confessed. “I’ve missed it and I think it’s time I get back up there.”

“Capitalizing on our ‘Moses’ number, are you?” Owen joked.

“You should think about it too, Owen,” Ianto suggested. “I saw that video. I could tell how much fun you were having.”

Owen shoved some food into his mouth and mumbled a response that sounded vaguely like, “I’ll think about it.”

“So, this is what you want to do, Jack? Are you taking time off from the show?”

“No, I want to work around it, if we can. Ianto and I have been approached to work on a new musical and we want to take it.”

“Well, hopefully, we’ll work it all out. I’ll do what I can.”

“Thanks, Tosh,” Ianto said for them both.

Jack grabbed Ianto’s hand and squeezed it. He was getting back on track. He had felt like something was missing in his life, but that feeling was gone. All he felt was happiness. And looking at Ianto as he laughed and joked with his family of friends, he knew that Ianto was just as happy as he. Against the odds, the glitz and camera flashes, the adoring fans and the crusading cynics, they were able to persevere. And they always would.

It was a glorious feeling to be happy again.
