Today I volunteered at Cameron Conference, the day when the Biology and Marine Biology students present their posters or give a talk. It was pretty cool because I got some yummy free food and got to talk with some people about what it's like to do an honours. Answer: hard. I still haven't decided if I'm going to do my honours yet. I have the marks to, and I'd planned on doing it so I took all the required courses but now I'm wondering if I really want to. Maybe I'll just meet with some prof's and see if I'm interested in anything. The problem is I don't have any real lab experience (I will just tell them that I am bright and a quick learner :) I can fool those guys for sure).
While I was in the 5th floor lounge helping set up for lunch, one of the guy's on the bio coulcil mentioned that he had seen Allison's picture in the gazette because she's on this society that was recently formed to raise awareness about homophobia on campus. So, thinking that this guy is interested in this society I started telling him about how it was formed because of an incident early this year where a couple students at a university ball were making homphobic remaks directed towards particular people at the event. So this socitey was formed to come up with ways to raise people's awarness. Anyway, then this guy says "don't you think it's kind of overkill?" and this other guy chimes in "Yeah, I believe in freedom of speech, even if it's offensive" WHAT? Is he serious? Since when is making hateful remarks to someone because of their assumed sexual orientation "freedom of speech"? I was some ticked off, but I didn't want to make a scene, it being Cameron Conference and all, I just said something lame like "Well, I'd have to disagree with you..." and then went to set up some dessert plates. But really, I wish I could have torn that guy a new one (ok...so that's not exactly productive...what I meant was "battered down his illogical claims through my powers of logic, reasoning and my ideals of social justice").
But really, how long is it before this guy's idea of "freedom of speech" escalates into some sort of hate crime?
People drive me nuts.
