So the parents are flying back to our nation's dangly bit tomorrow around noon, and I'll be quite sad to see them off. Having students to teach, grade, obsess over, regret obsessing over, etc. certainly took too much time away from my folks, but these last few days were really nice. Since they stayed here on the comfy couch still up for grabs, we got to see lots more of each other than usual, when they stay in a hotel. It does sorta seem like I only got to start hanging out with them on the 1st, but it's been wonderful regardless of when my brain truly began to feel in sync with them. Today was especially nice, having Punky come out and hang out while Mom instructed me on her ace packing techniques, all of us going out to the Dragon House for dinner, and then back for more packing until it was time for punky to drive back home.
After taking my folks to ONT tomorrow, I'm off to punkylandia for an afternoon and evening. We're planning to see one of the high water marks of Hollywood Cinema out under the stars. That's right, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure is being shown at Hollywood Forever, and you must not know me very well if you think I'm uninterested in seeing it in all its big-screen glory.
I'm also planning to pick up tickets at
sea level records for the August 15th
comets on fire show at the Echo. I highly recommend Comets on Fire's new cd, which comes out in a week or so, as well as their most recent one, Blue Cathedral (both are on Sub Pop). They do a great job of making a crazy blistering (marginally-)experimental psychedelic racket, but still making it accessible and never disappearing into their own navel or confuse self-indulgence for artistry.
Hmm, what else? Many, many public words of praise are due
wepa_woman for her moving suggestions. At the moment it looks like I'm actually going to be mostly shipping my stuff via the regular 'ol US postal service, since "media mail" allows for books, magazines, music, and dvds to all be mixed up in the same box - AND each of those boxes will cost about 1/3 of what it would be via UPS. I'll ship some of the bigger stuff via UPS, but this way looks like it's by far going to be cheaper than using a long-distance moving company. Since I assume that almost everyone who's reading this will be doing some sort of big move in the next 3-5 years, I'll post about my experiences with the shipping companies as they happen.
Oh, I'm also reverting to Plan B and flying straight from LA to Rochester instead of detouring to Florida for week, since figuring out what to do with my stuff when it arrived in Rochester before I did was passing beyond a pain and into nerve-wrackingly debilitating for myself and especially my poor little wallet.
Also, I'm going to be getting rid of more stuff than I orginally planned since I'm shipping everything instead of going through movers. So most of my furniture is now up for grabs (the two little wooden endtables are mine, but everything else that wasn't made by a family member is up for sale/grabs)! You've probably all already seen the list I put up via the Eng List-serv, but I've also got a hitherto unoffered, extremely awesome computer desk with built-in cubbies that hold handing file folders and a nifty computer chair that I need to get rid of. I'm going to list these and some other stuff soon in a follow-up list to the list-serv, but you guys and gals all get first dibs - just let me know if anything tickles your fancy even the slightest. This stuff needs to find a home, and the dumpster seems like an absolute waste.
Well, I should probably start moving on towards sleep sooner or later, so I'll go ahead and stop blathering at you now.
