What would happen if you took a hammer to the liberty bell and destroyed it? You'd be arrested.. why is the flag any different?
Because not everyone can go to Wal-Mart and buy a Liberty Bell for $4.99. Because nobody gets aresetd if the flag hits the ground, stays out in the rain, or overnight without proper lighting, Or when it has been torn up by wind. Instead, you buy a ceap-ass one, put it on your car antenna, and show respect by letting it tear itself apart at 75 mph.
Because every ammendment made to our constitution which says "You can protest, except..." is taking away your liberties. We have the right to assemble, the right to protest. Yes, the burning of the flag raises emotions, which is why some folks use that. Arrest them for not having a fire permit, but not becaue it is the flag they are burning.
For the record, as may be noted from some of my posts, I am a fervant patriot. I was brought up learning all the proper ways to handle the flag, and I would bet dollars to donuts I can color guard better than most Americans. And I've burned a flag. Why? Cause it's one of te methods for disposing of the flag, one of TWO acceptable ones. It pisses me off to see one burned in protest, but also when I watch the abuse heaped on it day in and out by ignorant "Patriots." But I heartedly believe it is your right to utilize free speech. Yes, it's offensive to burn the flag, but it is (IMO) equally offensive to wave around a Nazi flag around Jews, or wear white robes while marching through Harlem. But that's the price of freedom. Sometimes, it makes you uncomfortable.
