15 Books

Meme meme, memeity meme.

Fifteen books you've read that will always stick with you. First fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes. (In no particular order)

1. Something Wicked This Way Comes - Ray Bradbury My parents read this to me at an impressionable age. Some of the most beautiful, haunting prose I've ever read.
2. Brave New World - Aldous Huxley I will forever associate this book with my trip to Scotland for WorldCon in 2005. And waiting in the Toronto Airport for an eternity.
3. Arcadia - Tom Stoppard I decided to become a theatre major because of this play and this play alone. In short, Arcadia changed my life.
4. Cordelia's Honor - Lois McMaster Bujold Favorite science fiction heroine of all time.
5. Time and Again - Jack Finney I once heard a rumor someone was trying to adapt this time travel novel into a musical. Strangely enough, I think it might work.
6. The Yiddish Policemen's Union - Michael Chabon Favorite recent novel, I'm sure I'll reread it many times to come. I hope the Coen brothers can do this justice. (I have already cast the entire film in my head.)
7. The Earthsea Trilogy - Ursula K. LeGuin Call me heretic, but I prefer Earthsea to Middle Earth.
8. The Lady's Not for Burning - Christopher Fry Christopher Fry's modern verse plays are stunning. Here's a clip from the Kenneth Branagh version because the Richard Chamberlain is not on YouTube. :/
9. Travesties - Tom Stoppard Absurdism, Dada, The Importance of Being Ernest, and the true meaning of revolution. "I learned three things in Zurich during the war..."
10. Life Among the Savages - Shirley Jackson Something about this has always reminded me a little bit of my own family.
11. The Witches of Karres - James Schmitz Speaking of a family resemblance! My parents have compared me to the Leewit for about as long as I can remember. Likewise, Alison is Maleen and Rachel is Goth.
12. Amphigorey (et al) - Edward Gorey Master of the macabre, and one of my artistic inspirations. Doubly so for the PBS Mystery! credits.
13. Company - Stephen Sondheim and George Furth Hand in hand with #3 on this list, this would be the work that made me realize I wanted to analyze musicals as much as I wanted to analyze plays.
14. Wit - Margaret Edson This play is so sad and beautiful. Not only is it a wonderful work on its own, it gave me a better understanding of the John Donne sonnets at the centre of it.
15. Harry Potter - JKR I was hesitant to include this, but it got me into fandom and lead me to create new worlds. Most of what I wrote was rubbish and I'm glad I didn't post more than an 1/8 of it to the internet. But it got me writing and drawing and adapting her world into my own. So for that I'm grateful.
