Half running, Satoshi takes a turn at a corner, and his phone rings. He fishes it out of his pocket with his free hand, and tightening his hold on the painting in his other hand, he answers it without checking the caller ID first, because he already knows who it might be.
"Where are you?!" comes Jun's impatient nag from across the line.
"One more crossroad to the gallery," Satoshi pants into his phone.
He hears Jun lets out a relieved sigh. "I thought you won't come. I need your opinion about the placement of your artworks for the last time before the exhibition officially opens tomorrow morning, you know?"
"I know. I overslept, I'm sorry."
"It's okay. See you soon at the gallery, then."
Jun cuts the line and Satoshi slides his phone back into his pocket. While doing so, he takes the last turn to the street where Jun's gallery is. And right at the moment, he bumps into a small figure who squeals in surprise.
For a moment, his sight goes blank, and Satoshi can hear the click-clack sounds of many small objects hitting the ground, followed by a small whimper.
"I'm sorry!" he quickly spits out. And when he gets his focus back, he finds a girl is sitting on the cold pavement, grimacing. Satoshi reflexively offers his free hand to that girl, attempting to help her gets up from the ground. "Are you okay?"
But she doesn't answer. She just sits there, staring at Satoshi's extended hand with her lips slightly parted. It is then when Satoshi realizes that his hands are still in their worst shape.
Satoshi was staying up all night long last night, working on his last painting for tomorrow's exhibition in Jun's gallery. When he finished, he was already too sleepy to clean his hands properly. So his hands are now still covered by colorful paint-stains.
Seeing the expression on the girl's face, Satoshi immediately regrets his carelessness. He then quickly pulls his hand back to his side, spontaneously wiping it slowly against his trousers, as if attempting to erase the dried paints. "Uh, sorry about that... I-- I forgot that my hand's dirty..."
Unexpectedly, the girl gives him a wide smile and gets up from the pavement. She raises her hands for Satoshi to look, and Satoshi's eyes widen in half-surprise and half-excitement.
Her hands are small and cute with thin and long fingers. They are even more colorful than Satoshi's.
Right at that moment, Satoshi swears that those are the most beautiful hands he has ever seen in his whole life.
"Whoa," he breaths out in amazement. He feels his heart beats faster against his ribcages. "Y-you... too?"
The girl grins widely, and Satoshi chuckles while scratching the back of his head sheepishly. He then puts his painting down and helps the girl to gather her scattered belongings, which turn out to be painting tools.
Pencils, brushes, some tubes of oil paints... He hands the things he can grab back to the girl, who puts them back carefully into her white tote bag. And last, he grabs a sketchbook near his feet.
"Haru" is written in artistic letters on the cover of that sketchbook.
Haru. What a cute name.
"Thank you," she says when Satoshi returns her sketchbook. Then she inclines her head a bit and starts to walk away, leaving the speechless Satoshi alone in that corner.
It is then when an idea suddenly hits Satoshi.
"W-wait," he says, half-yelling to the girl's back in his nervousness. The girl--Haru--stops to turn at him again with questioning gaze.
"Well, uh..." he bits his lower lip, then hesitantly continues, "You know the gallery over there?" He points randomly behind him with his thumb.
She slowly nods.
"Well, I... I'm holding an exhibition there starting tomorrow. I-if you're interested, then please come. I- I'll be happy to see you again..." Satoshi can't help the slight blush creeping up his cheeks.
"Oh," she remarks, and Satoshi sees a shade of pink appears on her cheeks. "Then, I'll see you tomorrow." And with a last shy smile, she resumes her steps and walks away.
Satoshi can't hide his grin the rest of his way to Jun's gallery. For this once, he feels grateful for his paint-stained hands.
