Character
Name: James Sunderland
Series: Silent Hill
Timeline: Middle of Silent Hill 2, from when he passes out after fighting with the lustful lips.
Canon Resource Links: http://silenthill.wikia.com/wiki/James A really good source for the games/characters in general
Affiliation: Trainer, because it actually seems like the simplest thing listed. Not that James is dumb or anything, just when it comes to complicated things he just isn’t the best at them. Who knows he might become a breeder or something later.

Personality: Many of the heroes of books, movies, and videogames alike have something in common. Something makes them stand out, like incredible courage, a hidden power, a world-changing destiny, or maybe just a really, really cool outfit. James Sunderland is not one of those people. In fact, the only part of his outfit even worth mentioning is his green army field jacket and even then, that is something anyone could pick up at their local army surplus store. Another thing that is very common in the typical hero is their outstanding charisma and social prowess, which is something that is not present for the tall, slightly chubby and average looking blond. Whereas most heroes are radiant symbols of masculinity and power, even having their own slab of uniqueness (well, generally they are unique), James is nothing more than an average-Joe. So much so, he is nothing but a store clerk, which isn’t really a bad thing except when you are one year shy of thirty and this, is all you have to show for how successfully in life you have been. It is pretty obvious that James has nearly no real ambitions in life, just meandering about day by day with his tiny paycheck. Which, for someone like him, is enough. He isn’t one to need a glamorous life or a lot of money to make it by, or even a lot of attention. This is actually a good quality for him, considering he isn’t one to catch anyone’s eye or that he’s going to be successful at anything anytime soon. It is made apparently pretty early on in the game that James is completely lacking in social grace and that most people just shrug him off. Small talk is even too much for the man to handle.

Throughout the game it is made obvious that James is a rather deep character when it comes to his personality. Well, when it comes to anything really. When it first starts it shows James to be a rather melancholy man, reminiscing about his deceased wife and how Silent Hill was their special place, only for him to later show a slightly softer side when he runs into a girl named Angela. While the game makes it apparent that James is a rather kind, caring and socially inept person, it is also apparent that he had changed from who he was before the game takes place. While his admirable traits still shine through, he still has his flaws. Being a man of no friends, and having the only person he was close to taken away in such a traumatic way(his wife had been diagnosed with a fatal disease and he was left to watch her slowly decay away in a hospital bed), it is safe to say that James had grown bitter; even cold and distant. Even though on the surface he seems to be almost intimidating, it is nothing more than a paper thin wall he places up to protect himself. James had never been a man of many friends, or any at all, so his perpetual loneliness and pain from such a terrible event in his life had left him less than friendly. Most people labeled him as rude or surly, but they also didn’t understand what the man was dealing with. Still don’t. However, in the game, since James had received a letter from his deceased wife it is awfully obvious his old self has emerged quite a bit. His optimistic hopefulness has resurfaced and his other old characteristics as well. The prospect of seeing the woman who meant the world to him was enough to temporary resurrect the old James that had seemingly died when word of his wife’s expiration was first spoken.

Where James is coming from in the game he is rather conflicted, while his soft, old self is still primarily dominant, that distant coldness is still present as well. As much as it is a contrast to how the man had been in the past-it is still a part of who he is now. While he may seem fully mentally intact at first, he is quite the opposite. On top of the emotional trauma the man had dealt with and the changes in his personality, he is a bit crazy. Of course, not in that stereotypical ‘GONNA GO AROUND AND KILL PEOPLE NOW’ crazy, oh no. He is delusional, which should be another thing quite obvious about him, what man in their right mind would drive half a day away because of a request he got in letter form from a woman who has been dead for three years? If you can tell me that is something a normal person would do, then maybe James has found a friend-or at the very least someone who thinks along the same lines as him. Either way, James is most definitely a bit unbalanced, but in the end he means well with what he says and does. He is more than willing to offer a helping hand, but this doesn’t always mean he’ll be the best of help. While he is kind and caring, he is still fragile and broken and something so brittle can only do so much till it breaks even more. With having that mentioned, there is a quality about James that goes along with his fragility. He has an immeasurable sense of guilt and self loathing. So much so, in the game he created himself a personal executioner to torment and torture him for his wrong doings. If that doesn’t make a statement on how much of a guilt complex this man has, I don’t think anything will. This plays into his sense of loyalty too, which feeds into his complex. To sum this all up, James is a very troubled individual and to say he is even close to being emotionally stable would be the greatest lie of the century.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:

Loyal: James is like a dog when it comes to loyalty; he has a deep rooted sense of loyalty and will do his best not to betray anyone he cares for. Like stated before, James isn’t one to have many friends, so when he is able to obtain some he is as loyal as one could possibly be, especially to the one he loves. Beautiful sex fantasy right there for the taking? Nah, James would rather continue looking for his wife.

Physically strong: Not that this really matters here, but James is a big guy. Not to say he’s fat, although he has a little chub, he just has quite the bigger build. Of course he isn’t one for physical violence unless it’s completely necessary.

Doesn’t afraid of anything: Not really, but James has a knack for being able to stay calm in odd situations that generally are life threatening. This could be because he has no real self preservation; it also could be because most the time he’s wrapped in his own delusions.

Good at Puzzles: Of the illogical variety. You spend most of Silent Hill 2 picking up objects most people would discard as junk(A piece of hair, a wax doll, a horse shoe…) and then using it later to progress in the game. So if there is something that needs to be fixed, call on James Sunderland; he’s MacGyver Silent Hill style. Not saying he’d be able to fix it right up, but who knows he might be able to think of something.

Good at improvising weapons: Again, something that won’t matter too much here, but it is a strength if anything. The first weapon James arms himself with is a 2x4 with nails in it. I think that says enough about his ability of improvising weapons.

Weaknesses

Not mentally/emotionally sound: Like stated earlier, this isn’t to be confused with the stereotypical crazy person, James merely has delusions and becomes confused a lot because of it. He really isn’t a danger to anyone and actually will more than likely try to keep to himself anyways.

Loner: Whether by choice or otherwise, James is generally alone. This is a flaw in the sense that it leaves him pretty vulnerable, and boy is he EVER vulnerable.

Vulnerable: He undoubtedly is vulnerable to many things; his emotional stability doesn’t help this at all either. He may put up a wall to protect him, seem standoffish and even rude, but this is merely a defense mechanism. James’ defenses are actually pretty easy to get past and when that happens he is very easy to hurt.

One track mind: This is somewhat a cause and effect thing that has to do with his loyalty. When James has his mind set on something, he is going to focus on it and only it. Even when caught up doing something else, his mind is CONSTANTLY on the task he was focused on before. As of right now that task is finding his wife, so he will probably be a little side tracked in his Pokemon quest.

Sometimes easy to trust: Some people wouldn’t see this as a flaw so much as a strength. But in James’ case, it gets him hurt quite often. He tries his best to see the best in people, but sometimes that just ends up hurting him in the long run.

Easily confused: In the midst of trying to understand the strange things that are happening to him and his delusions, even simple things can confuse the poor man. He isn’t dumb or slow by any means, but it is quite simple to puzzle the poor guy.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: He has it.

Chubby: This is a flaw mainly because it hinders how long he can run or travel in general without getting tired. Let’s face it, James is a middle aged, slightly overweight, store clerk. He isn’t some athlete who can run 5 miles like it’s nothing. You can probably get a good 50 feet from him and then he has to jog or just stop for air.

Surly: Since his wife’s death he has become standoffish and distant towards people. He was never good at befriending people before, but that was probably more so due to his awkwardness and not so much him being unpleasant. Not to say he goes out of his way to be rude to anyone, but he doesn’t try too hard to please anyone with his replies; and who can blame him? Anyone would be bitter after what this man has gone through.

Pokemon
Starter: A bold natured Slowpoke named Pinky because James is creative at naming things. Look at Pyramid Head...

Samples
(Please note that both samples must take place in Route_29’s setting.)

First Person Sample: Last I can remember I was in that hellish hospital. With those demon-like nurses and animated mannequins… and those things that hung from the ceiling. I had been locked in that room by that little brat girl Laura and had just finished fending them off when I was overcome by something and passed out. So you can bet your rear end that I was pretty confused when I awoke in some room I wasn’t even familiar with.

Next thing I knew, I was shoved outside after being handed a bunch of things I didn’t quite think I needed, but I wasn’t about to argue. I’ve always found it easier not to argue anyways; and it wasn’t like I had the chance to, the door was closed quickly behind me after I was rushed out. A sense of relief washed over me when I noticed there were others just as confused as I was. Some guy was wandering around explaining things and what not, I wasn’t really paying attention, and I just wanted to know where I was and why I wasn’t still in Silent Hill.

I had left Laura and Maria behind and I still needed to find my wife. I didn’t have time to be in some strange place!

Getting a tad annoyed, I started to head out of the small town… Could you even call it a town? It was awful small; it was amazing how many people even fit in the middle of this place. As I was on my way, still toting around that junk I was given, a small red and white ball dropped from the stuff in my arms. I halted to watch it, the shiny metal sphere bouncing once before hitting a second time and then… opened?

I will admit, I was surprised by the blinding flash of light that shot from the little contraption and the fact it took form of something was even more astonishing-if not a little frightening. After experiencing the hell I’ve been through, weird occurrences like this was not something to marvel over, it was something to get ready to defend yourself from. It was then that I realized I was completely defenseless. My weapons I had been lugging around with me the entire trip through Silent Hill were gone. All I had on me was the junk that woman had handed me, the things I was currently clutching in my arms.

Petrified, I watched as the white light finally dissipated; taking on the form of something that looked like a cross between a hippopotamus and some sort of lizard. Not only was that a weird combination, it was cotton candy pink… I will tell you, expecting something horrendous to come after you and preparing yourself to book it in the other direction becomes almost hilarious when the thing you were so worried about… Looks like that. Of course I was still cautious of it, how could I not be? I have never seen anything like that in my life, and for all I know this could be another part of that twisted town; though I will admit this is quite the contrast to that town’s general taste. As I continued to watch this thing even closer it was rather apparent that it wasn’t going to attack. The way it just stood there and lazily looked around, yawned and then made its way to the water was enough to show me it was more interested in other things than attacking me.

As I looked around at the others, I was quick to realize that almost everyone had one of these weird creatures, they weren’t exactly the same but they all seemed to have come out of that strange ball-thing. Figuring I should situate the items I was given, I put that backpack on and looked over that strange red book/computer like object; which I had no idea what it was. I was pretty glad my… pokemon? Was that what they called these things? Anyways, it seemed to be very passive and was just sitting at the water’s edge with its tail submerged. In which made it easier for me to just focus on where I was and how I was going to get back to Silent Hill…

I needed to find Mary…

Third Person Sample: The tall blond really hadn’t gotten far at all, even after being there for an hour or so he didn’t really move. There were several reasons for this of course, one being he was tampering with the weird gadgets he was given, the other was his bubble-gum colored pokemon was still fishing. He wasn’t exactly sure how to get its attention, or how to get it back into its ball for that matter. So, since he had long since given up trying to get the dopey thing to move, he had parked himself on the grass not far from the water. Still not paying much attention to the pink pokemon who was casually repeating variations of its own name. There was too much to worry about for the middle aged man, where was he? How was he going to get back? Was Maria and Laura okay? How the hell does he work this weird thing?

See? Lots to worry about!

He didn’t get how anyone could get this damned thing to work at all. He had never seen anything like this before and well to be honest, the most high tech thing he had any experience with was a cash register and even then it had labels on the buttons. This thing? Yeah it wasn’t so generous. This irritated the confused, lost and worried clerk even more.

After a bit of time and frustration with the strange technology; he decided to watch some of the other trainers, maybe he could get an idea of how to use this stuff from them. In the midst of not paying attention to his pokemon, it had actually made quite a fuss and was saying its name is greater repetition than before. But James had just figured that the creature was being annoying so he continued to pay no mind to it, actually he had gone back to tampering with the weird machine thing, in which he had overheard it being called ‘Pokegear’. Hitting a few buttons he was able to get what seemed like a video feed to start. Panicking, he tried to turn it off, but before he could-his slowpoke had let out a rather loud ‘SLOOOW’ which made him whip his head to see what the hell was the matter… Only to see an orange colored fish being hurled into his direction.

“What-AAAAH-“

He couldn’t even react fast enough before the large carp-like thing slammed into him.

For anyone who had been watching the video feed, it showed James giving a rather disgruntled look at the camera before he quickly whipped his head to see what was causing his pokemon to let out such a sound before the feed was filled with a spinning sky and then a rotation of grass, sky, grass, sky, grass.

James was sprawled out on his back, the fish flopping around him and his things scattered on the grass. He didn’t move except to let out a pained groan. After a few moments, he sat up and looked at the flopping fish before giving a disgruntle look of disappointment at his Slowpoke, who was in the middle of approaching him. It didn’t seem to think it had done anything wrong, but James had a different view point on the situation. But what was he going to do? Scold it? Like that would do much, the damn thing seemed lucky enough to have the brain capacity to breathe. After scowling at the derpy pink pokemon, he stood up and dusted himself off. Damn, that fish had to have weighed around 20lbs with how hard it hit him. Getting a better look at it, he was willing to bet maybe even more. James had never seen a fish so big before-except on tv or something, but never in person. He wasn’t exactly sure what to do with the poor flopping thing. His first thought was to throw it back in the water, but then he reminded himself that the professor looking guy who was running around explaining things mentioned keeping these weird, brightly colored, animal things.

So, he had to keep it? But it couldn’t walk on land like his slow-thing. So he had to carry it? Wasn’t there a more effective way to do this? He didn’t recall them mentioning it; hell he didn’t even know how to put his pink-dumb-thing back in that ball (That’s what he gets for not listening). So, he had no other choice. Grabbing the pokegear and finding the button that turned off the video feed, he then went over to the flopping fish; he finally calmed the orange pokemon and settled it comfortably in his arms before pressing on.

It seemed like everyone else was heading out into the wilderness, so James thought maybe he should follow suit; especially since his pink-thing wasn’t sitting around anymore and was following him. He wasn’t exactly sure what he was going to find in this world, if he was going to find Mary, if he was going to find a way back, if he’d see Maria, Eddie, Angela, or even Laura again. All he did know was that he should continue on and see what he could find. Maybe play along with what these people were talking about with these… Pokemon or whatever.

So, whether James liked it or not he was on his way to starting his own pokemon adventure; albeit a reluctant one at that.
