here “I can´t believe this. Pi is such a traitor,” Ryo says for at least the 10th time that evening.
“Please shut up. I do understand your feelings about Pi by now.” Shige actually thinks the same about Koyama (for the 10th time), but he only throws himself on the bed, freshly out of the shower, too tired to even attempt any conversation with his roommate.
“I would. This is just my mind still processing that I am stuck with you for the night,” Ryo retorts angrily, shuts the curtains, turns off the big lights and plops onto his own bed.
“You are not listening to the music aloud tonight,” he adds out of spite. Shige is wearing headphones already.
“Glad to hear you enjoy my company,” the other shoots back.
That moment some weird noise comes from behind their door, and Ryo shivers. The fact he is reading some horror story has notably strengthened his awareness of his surroundings, not that he would ever admit it. He freezes when the sound intensifies. That moment Shige looks at him, surprised there was no come back and realizes Ryo is staring at the door with - is it fear? No, no way.
“What is wrong, Nishikido-kun?” He asks, putting the headphones down.
The sound stops.
“Oh, it´s nothing, it´s nothing.”
Shige shrugs his shoulders and is about to return to his music when the sound of the door screeching surprises him almost as much as the yelp escaping Ryo´s mouth.
“What the hell?”
“Pi?” Ryo asks tentatively. It is a stupid question really because Pi doesn´t have a card to open their room.
“Kei-chan?” Shige adds as the screeching sound is a little abnormal, and Ryo´s now positively scared expression doesn´t help.
No response.
Another scratch, then the door actually opens a little and there is some weird fabric floating through the opening they have in view.
“This is not funny,” Shige says louder than is really necessary, still hoping it is another one of Tegoshi´s pranks.
“Tegoshi, stop playing around!” Ryo get´s the hint, tries to persuade himself it really is the young teaser, but there is no response. Only his high-pitch voice echoes off the walls. Stupid rustic hotels.
The door screeches again, opens some more, and both Shige and Ryo leap to the door, forcing it back shut with a loud thud that scares them both even more.
“What was that?” Ryo asks, his back against the door, his hip against Shige´s hip.
“No idea, but you looked scared.”
“I looked scared? You shouted like crazy and sprinted to the door.”
“And you are still lying safely in bed, sleeping tight, right.” Shige rolls his eyes, and there is scratching at the door.
Ryo jerks and Shige´s breath hitches. They stare ahead of themselves into a dimly lit room where every move of the curtain caused by the breeze from the open window looks terrifying, especially in a dim light of a small nightstand lamp. There is a persistent scratching at the door, and Ryo covers his ears and starts singing Ai no matador because it is down to earth, silly song and a loud one. Shige joins him, but when they finish, the scratching is still there, and someone is trying to open the door from outside.
“We need help,” Ryo whispers.
“Who is going to help us, and from what?” Shige wonders why they are whispering.
“Pi, Koyama, Massu, … I don´t care, just call someone and tell them a ghost is trying to get us.”
“A ghost?” Shige sounds doubtful in his panic.
“What else is it then?”
“Guys, stop it. This is not funny,” Shige shouts, but no one responds.
“I am going to call Pi,” Ryo decides and is about to leave the door.
“Wait, wait!” Shige pulls him by the sleeve, “don´t leave me here.” His heels are planted firmly against the ground as are Ryo´s; they are pushing against the door. “The ghost is going to, to … do something to me.”
“I thought you don´t believe there is one.”
“I … just. What if it, whatever it is, is going to open the door and … and eat me and then have you for a desert?”
“I don´t think it will have enough room for me when it is done with you,” Ryo says but stops moving towards his phone.
“You are tiny, you could always fit,” Shige says angrily.
“Ok, ok let´s calm down. We need help from outside. You are smart, think of a way to get to the cell phone.”
“Suddenly, I am smart,” Shige huffs but looks around in search of a solution anyway.
“Ok, I think you will just have to go for it, and I´ll be brave and try to hold it off. Come right back!”
Ryo would laugh at Shige stating he will be brave about himself, but he is too scared, the screeching, scratching and shallow thuds not stopping. He launches to the bed quickly and in no time is back. Shige is breathing like he has run a marathon and is white as chalk.
“You did good,” Ryo says just because he doesn´t want him to faint. He needs him to help defend the fortress.
Shige gives him a faint smile and then jumps when there is a loud thud on the door, followed by what one might call a hysterical laughter. They both scream in perfect unison, Ryo dials quickly and Pi answers.
“Pi, there is a ghost in front of our room. Get others and scare him way or something.”
Pi on the other end of the line chuckles.
“Ryo, are you watching too many bad horror movies again?”
“I have never …” A loud thud. “Pi, please come quickly,” Ryo cries into the phone, Shige now digging his nails into Ryo´s thigh, Ryo´s hand firm around Shige´s wrist, leaving white marks, almost cutting off his blood circuit.
“Hey, Koyama,” Pi says on the other side of the phone, “Ryo says there is a ghost in front of the room trying to eat them or something. Let´s go check it out.”
There is short silence, and not only on the phone but everywhere, and then Pi is knocking on the door from the other side.
“Ryo, I am standing in front of your door. Let me in; there is nothing here. Are you trying to prank me?”
“Shige, is this you getting back at me for wanting to bunk with Pi for a change?” Koyama´s soft voice joins in.
“Yes sure, because this is a revenge I would come up with,” Shige says, his voice shaky. They move away from the door and open it. There are only Pi and Koyama in pajamas standing in the hallway.
“It´s gone,” Ryo breathes out.
“Was it ever here?” Pi asks, amusement fighting its way through his serious tone.
“Of course it was,” Shige insists.
“Right, right,” Koyama says gingerly, “now come on you two, off to bed! We have a long day tomorrow.”
He gets into the room, makes both of the pale and shaky boys go back to their beds. He tackles Shige in properly and then attempts the same with Ryo, and the short one almost lets him before he realizes he is being babied. Pi stands in the doorway, his arms crossed, and he watches on in amusement. They wish them good night, and Koyama wants to turn off the light, but Shige stops him and since Ryo is not saying anything other than “I hate you all for not believing me”, the light stays on and the door is shut.
Ryo flunks himself at it when Yamapi and Koyama are out and locks the security lock from inside.
“Like that would stop a ghost,” Shige attempts to sound cool again.
“Shut up. You know it was there.” Ryo is back in his bed, but his eyes are wide, and he can´t stop his stomach from doing a somersault when Shige´s bed screeches as the younger man turns around to look at him.
“Yeah,” is all the other says. Ryo watches him for a little while, then lifts up his blanket, deciding he wants to know - not guess, next time Shige moves.
“Shige, you are trembling. You are sleeping with me tonight. Otherwise you will be completely restless and scared, and we all will have to deal with an incompetent pretence of an idol tomorrow,” he states.
Shige concentrates on his retort, but then the wind sweeps the curtains a little and he decides to ignore that it is Ryo who in fact might be restless all night and incompetent tomorrow. He switches beds, presses his back against Ryo´s chest and huffs contently at the warm bed, warm body too and a pleasant smell.
Both of their breaths finally even. Ryo appreciates that Shige uses a fresh smelling shampoo, not heavy and coconut as Pi, and he smiles into his hair.
“It is gone,” he says for both of their comforts and goes to sleep thinking Shige might be a decent pillow. The other boy contemplates on forgiving Koyama for being so friendly with Pi lately.
In Pi´s room, four people are laughing loudly, Tegoshi the loudest, Massu almost losing his breath and Pi flailing around high-fiving them all.
“Tegoshi, this was the best. Your maniacal laugh is extra class. Koyama, great idea to put those two together, and Massu how did you know they would be so scared if you show them a piece of a blanket?”
Massu slaps his knees and points to Pi.
“Without your amazing skills of getting us a spare card from that girl in the reception, it wouldn´t be half as good.”
Yamapi falls on the floor laughing. Few second later, Koyama finally finds enough strength to speak again.
“What do you say, should we make them sing Ai no matador as a duet in our next concert?”
