Last week on Tuesday, my grandma passed away. She went peacefully and my brother was with her at the time. She was 86. I'm grateful for all the time we had with her, although, naturally, I wish I had more time. She did live long enough to see her fourth great grandchild (two from one of my sisters and two from my brother).
She was the only one in the family that didn't know I didn't eat rice. She figured I didn't eat much and I think that she felt it her duty to supply me with rice to encourage me to eat more (she would get me a 20kg bag of rice twice a year). I'm not quite sure why but one memory that's prominent occurred during a lunch I was having with her. On the table was some BBQ pork, some chicken, some steamed egg with vermicelli, and rice. Midway through the meal, she leaned over and told me, "it's important to eat your vegetables." I know she meant it more generally, but the timing was just priceless.
She'll be missed.
