Doing things a bit differently this time around. It seems that every single time I start writing convention reports, they end up these huge epic posts that no one has energy to read. *g* Or actually right now I don't unfortunately have time to write. So I'm doing highlights per guest and starting with Thomas Dekker. Even if this was supposed to just be highlights, it got quite long anyway. *g*
General note. Had a blast. Saw a lot of old friends, met some new people.
There are pictures. Please don't repost without asking first. Also credit is appreciated.
T3: Rise of the Nerds - Thomas
Was seated way back during the opening ceremony so my pictures came out really blurry. Or it is also possible I don't know how to use my camera. *g* Thomas said a few words about being happy to be there, hoping to see some familiar faces from the previous year when he was there last as well as meeting some new people.
The opening ceremony was followed by a meet & greet for the Gold Pass holders. I was lucky to have an empty chair beside me when Thomas came to our table so he sat beside me. Some of what was being talked has completely escaped me. Thomas did ask us where we were from and when I told him I was from Finland he told he had met some other people from Finland as well which surprised me since I wasn't aware of them. Oh well, there were around 300 people in the convention. Can't really know everyone. What I do remember is that he told us the basic idea behind the series. He also said that he's really excited about The Secret Circle and that they begin filming in a few weeks. There was some talk about the pilot and how it had already been picked up. When I said I had seen the six minute preview and how I had liked what I had seen, he said that he felt the pilot was more cheesy than what the pilot is really like. I think that sounded really promising.
While Thomas was talking about TSC I noticed that he kept referring to his character being a witch. I asked him about that and why he didn't use the word "warlock" which I think is commonly used for male witches. He said he wasn't exactly sure about that but that everyone was referred as a witch on the show so he used that as well.
Saturday morning I had my photo taken with Thomas. Asked for a huggy-photo and got one. Not too happy with the picture but I'm not happy with most of my photos, so there. *g*
On Saturday afternoon Thomas had a solo talk. Most questions were around Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I've watched the series but unfortunately can't remember much about it. Should have rewatched before the convention. There were also some questions about the movies Thomas has made and his other projects. Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to see those.
Someone got up and asked about TSC and Thomas again repeated the basic outline of the series, the same he had told us the previous night during the meet & greet.
A while later I got up and asked Thomas if he had read the books the series was based on and he told me that he hadn't but that he had bought them and was planning on reading them at some point. He just didn't want to influence his character in the pilot by how he was portrayed in the book. I did mention that there are quite a few differences in the book compared to what I've seen in the preview. One of the examples I used was that there are 12 members in the circle in the book but only six in the series. He gave a bit enigmatic response to that which was basically that there were just six members as far as we knew but that things could change. Don't know what to think about that. *g*
In the middle of the talk a member of the staff from the organizer's side handed Thomas an email. It seemed Lena Headey had sent him an email telling him to tell us a story from the set of T:TSCC. He called it "The crotch story". He explained that sometimes in the scenes where his and Lena's characters were filmed driving, the only way for them to be in contact with the film crew was through a walkie talkie. Thomas said that he usually kept it between his legs so that it was on hand if needed. However, this one time he had placed it into a cupholder between them. However, Lena didn't notice this and without looking she started to reach for the walkie talkie. You can figure out the rest. Thomas had us howling with laughter with that story.
In the evening it was time for autographs. I was on a steward shift during the autograph session but when it started to slow down, I was given permission to go and get my autographs as well. I noticed Thomas had no queue so I got straight to him. I do actually suspect he was just about to leave but managed to catch him before that. I'd been given a poster of the event which I got all the guests to sign. I had also purchased a 10x8 of Thomas for him to sign. As an afterthought, I had also paid for one extra autograph so that I could get my TSC book signed by him as well. He seemed to like the fact that I had the book with me. Unfortunately before I could say anything, he was already signing the cover. I had planned to have him sign the inside leaf since it would be easier to protect it then. Now I'm afraid the autograph is going to rub off. Have to come up with something to protect it.
Then there was an awkward moment for me when I realized I had a bookmark featuring Gale Harold marking my place in the book. However, Thomas didn't seem to mind it. He said that Gale was something else and that he had never met someone similar. He also said something about Gale being a really nice guy. I told him I had met Gale last year in LA while he was doing theater and he asked which play it had been. When I told him he said he had a feeling Gale had talked about doing that play at some point. Did let it slip that I had seen the play three times which seemed to surprise Thomas. Since there wasn't anyone after me queuing I could talk with him in peace. I said something about really waiting for the premier in September. When I mentioned the date he said that I probably knew better than him since he only knew it was in September. I also told him I'm taking part in a book club where we are reading the books before the series starts and discussing them. He told me I was probably the most enthusiastic person he had met this far in regards to TSC. Don't know if that's a good thing or not. *g* At that point someone else came to get his autograph so I needed to move on. Really enjoyed talking with him.
On Saturday evening they showed us some videos. One of the videos shown was a music video Thomas had made some years ago. It took me a while to realize it was him there. The video is called Psyanotic. It was quite interesting. *g*

On Sunday morning I was stewarding during the photo session but got a chance to take another picture with Thomas. When I walked to him on my turn he was already putting his arm on my shoulders when I requested for a back-to-back-photo. He seemed surprised by that. I don't think anyone else had requested one before from him. He did comment something about it being different. So we settled there with our backs against each other and got the photo taken. When the photographer was done, Thomas still commented that he really liked the idea and that he would have to remember it in the future and use it. This time around I'm actually quite happy with the picture. I like Thomas' expression on the pic.
In the afternoon there was again a talk. This time around Thomas was doing a talk together with Stephanie Jacobsen who was also on T:TSCC. There were quite a few questions about that series again as well as some of their other projects. Most of it has escaped my mind. Someone did tell him that we had watched his music video the previous night and he told us some things about doing it. They had to have hundreds of blacklight lamps to get the paint to glow properly. I think Thomas was around 16 when he made the video. The paint he gets over himself is normal housepaint which dried really quickly so he needed to be hosed down quickly after finishing filming. The other guys in the video are twins and I think Thomas said he had just had lunch with them a few days earlier. Also one of the first questions were about his tattoos and he explained them all and also showed some of them. He refused to show all of them *g*
Tried to come up with a TSC question but failing that I just got up to ask a general wacky question. I asked them what they would do if they could be the ruler of the world for a day. Thomas had no answer for me first so Stephanie said that she would make a decree that she would be the ruler of the world for a longer time. Thomas' reaction to that was that he should have thought of that. After some thinking he decided that he would send this huge amount of minions to find him all these obscure items that were lost or didn't really even exist. The necklace from the movie Titanic was mentioned.
In the evening it was again autographs. I wanted to get Thomas to sign our picture together so bought one more extra autograph for that. I was also given a funny photo of the all the guests together that I could get signed as well if I so wished. When I got to Thomas I handed first the cast photo for him to sign and then our photo together. He gave it a look and said that it had come out alright and then signed it. I thanked him for coming and said that I hoped I'd see him again some day and brought up the possibility of a TSC convention. He said that if the series did well, he might well be back and bring the whole cast with him. I do have to wonder if that would include Gale. Didn't dare to say anything about that.
A bit later I went outside with a few friends while they had a smoke and saw Thomas there talking on the phone about something. When he was finished with the call he said that he was trying to organize a surprise for us for the closing ceremony later that night. That sounded promising.
In the closing ceremony Thomas told us that he had a video that he had made together with Lena Headey who was with him on T:TSCC. It was quite amusing video with Lena jumping around in an orange jumpsuit. They had made the video during the last days of filming T:TSCC. He did suspect Lena might kill him for showing it to us.
In conclusion, really enjoyed meeting Thomas. He was very friendly and seemed to like talking about all his projects. Would love to see him again some day. Maybe after TSC starts he might do another appearance somewhere.
Then a proof of my weird mind. I find it interesting that the two series he has done have such similar abbreviations, T:TSCC and TSC. Yes, I'm weird. *g*
Then a standard disclaimer. I'm happy to share my experiences and photos. However, if you do share any bits and pieces somewhere else, I'd appreciate if you'd tell me what and where. Also credit would be muchly appreciated.
