Summary: Who was the kid Tegoshi found alone in a park one night? Birthday fic for laftkeichan :3

“ ‘Kaa san, is there food in the kitchen?”

“In the black cabinet.”

Tegoshi Yuuya was a man, a boy and a future father. Yet, here he was, ladle in hand, pot in another, cooking for a 3 year old who seemed to have decided that he was a mother. His manhood was snapped by a kindergartener; what a story to tell.

“I can’t reach it~”

Tegoshi sighed as he placed the pot gingerly on the stove and placed the ladle into the empty pot. He walked to the black cupboard and opened it, grabbing a packet of Chocolate Chip Cookies and placing it into the open arms of the younger boy. The boy with large eyes, soft hair and pouty lips. A child who claimed his name was Yamashita Tomohisa. Yes, there is a valid explanation for all this.

Three days ago, whist walking to the convenience store around the corner, he saw a young boy, crying alone in the dead of the night. He looked like it was at most 3 years old and was crouched underneath a park bench in the darkest corner of the park. Ghost was his first thought, child abandoned was his first logical thought. He walked up to that bench and gently pulled the little boy out, hugging him for a moment before deciding to lead the boy to the neighborhood police station, for those eyes that commanded such attention.

When the little boy mentioned his name was Yamashita Tomohisa, they laughed. Tegoshi, however, noticed something. It was nothing much really, just the way the little boy cried. It was a little familiar. The police sent them home and he went to the grab his midnight snack. Sweets soon cheered the little boy up and Tegoshi noticed something else. The little boy’s smile was familiar too.

So, three days later, the young boy had christened him ‘Okaa san’ and the police still haven’t called. Yamashita Tomohisa was coming for dinner tonight and then maybe, he could understand somepart of this dilemma.

Yamapi stared as he was introduced to the child before him. Tegoshi explained the situation and Yamapi stared to frown. It was true, he could recognize himself anywhere. It was the Yamashita Tomohisa of 20 years ago; there was no doubt about that. What was confusing him was, how and why did he appear here and now and why to Tegoshi?

“…O…Otou san?” The kindergartener began meekly as he tugged at the older boy’s coat. “Otou san?”
Yamapi didn’t really want to be told that he looked like his father but he did not bother correcting the younger boy.

“Are you coming back to us again…?”

“How have you been?” Yamapi avoided the question as he picked the kindergartener up gingerly and brought him close to his chest. The child sniffed into his shirt, snuggling into the warmth of the older boy’s coat. Tegoshi blinked in surprise, judging by Yamapi’s actions however, it became apparent who the boy really was.

“Where’s Okaa san?”

“She’s at home.”

“Where’s home?”

“Here.” Yamapi frowned.

“Tomo Chan, do you want to help make dinner?” Tegoshi smiled sympathetically as he grabbed gently at the 3 year old’s hands, so small in his. Yamapi smiled gratefully as he sat down to think. It was all a little confusing for him.

Tegoshi carefully arranged dinner on each separate platter. He sighed as he watched the older boy with his head nestled within his hands and he looked at the child who looked equally scared, his tiny hand shivering slightly in Tegoshi’s significantly larger one.

Dinner was soon finished and Tegoshi began to clear the plates; Yamapi standing up to help him. He remained silent as he felt the kindergartener staring intently at him and maintained his silence as he watched him punch enthusiastically at Tegoshi’s new Wii controller. The silence was only broken after Tegoshi asked him if he wanted to spend the night.

“I’m sorry I have to impose.”

“It’s okay. This is special after all.” Tegoshi chuckled slightly. Similar behavioral patterns between the 23 years old and the 3 year old, yet so different in size. The man who had always protected him and the little boy he needed to protect.

But he had probably fallen equally in love with the both of them.

It was Tegoshi’s rest day that day and he brought Tomo chan to the Amusement park. As they sat on ride after ride, he couldn’t help but fall deeper and deeper in love with this child. Vulnerability, something worth protecting.

“Ano ne? Okaa san…”

“Hmm?”

“Where’s Otou san ?”

“He’s working, Tomo chan… He’ll be meeting us tonight at home.”

“Is he…really working? Okaa san, is he really going to work again?”

“Eh?”

“Is he going to love us again?”

Tegoshi watched the tears dancing in the young boy’s eyes and felt a slight stab to his heart.

“He does love you, Tomo chan, very much.”

“Okaa san too?”

“Yes, Okaa san loves both of you very much too.”

**********************************************

Yamapi had returned that night with presents; a ton of toys and a few new sets of clothing. It’s a wonder that the idol actually had the time to shop, considering his schedule for the day. Tegoshi nodded, impressed with the extensive selection. Yamapi had even bought dinner.

“When did you find time to buy these things anyway~”

“I made time.” Yamapi yawned as he stretched out on the long couch in the center of Tegoshi’s living room. “He can’t be wearing that shirt all the time anyway. Thank you for looking after him.”

“You can’t thank me for looking after you~” Tegoshi chuckled as he watched Tomo chan attack his new toys with a vengeance, Yamapi smiled. It was the rare kind of smile, the gentle kind. Tegoshi felt his heart skip a beat as he found the smile that was being directed at him.

“Thank you for looking after me.”

“You’re welcome.”

**************************************

It was 3 months later when the young boy suddenly disappeared one day. Yamapi had wandered out to find the boy’s bed empty and a simple note in a scrawly handwriting on it

“Arigatou, Okaa san and Otou san, I’m going home now.” It said.

Tegoshi couldn’t help but feel a sense of loss, a lack of purpose. He couldn’t help but cry.
Yamapi smiled as he watched Tegoshi, for he was grateful to have someone who loves him that much.

“I’ll…I’ll miss him.” The younger boy murmured between muffled sobs. Yamapi laughed as he pulled the boy closer into his arms.

“He’s right here, Okaa san.”

Yamapi grabbed at Tegoshi’s hands, so small in his. Tomo chan had reminded him; Vulnerability was something worth protecting.

And he was reminded; Tegoshi was the only thing worth protecting.
