Vampire Pirate Guy: Origins - A Fan Ficlet

Jun 29, 2009 20:04

Normally, when it comes to fanfic, I am just an avid reader and occasional muse - I do not consider myself a writer.   So, this is actually my first attempt at writing a fanfic. Given Guy's final scenes in S3 of Robin Hood and the new continuing adventures of Vampire Pirate Guy (see also

amandajane17 ), I thought VPG deserved a short origins ficlet and decided to give writing a go this one time.   A special thanks (I think...) to Angie, for encouraging me to post this. ; )

“And free...”, Guy softly uttered.   His battered body was capable of no more and he lay motionless.  There was a tiny spark of life still struggling to hold on in a dim corner of his mind and he was vaguely aware of the bitter cold of the damp flagstones seeping through him until, at last, he became blissfully numb...a welcome respite from the burning pain of his wounds.  Although his vision had dimmed, Guy knew that Robin was still by his side and he felt a fleeting touch against his face as Robin gently closed his eyes with a soft brush of his hand.

Robin knew he couldn’t linger here, but he had to make things right…well, as right as things could be under this sorry set of circumstances.  “Guy, you said you would never ask for my forgiveness because you could not forgive yourself.   But, know that I do forgive you and it is my hope that you are finally able to forgive yourself.  Goodbye, my friend.” Guy absorbed these words and felt a splash of warmth on his icy face.  Tears and forgiveness, he thought with a detached sense of awe, for me...

Robin was gone now and Guy felt that tiny, stubborn flame guttering.  However, he was ready and he was at peace.  So, it came as a surprise to Guy when a voice softly murmured from nearby, “So magnificent…”  Then, suddenly, Guy’s blessed numbness was penetrated by a searing pain.  Just as Guy was beginning to think he’d ended up in the fires of Hell after all, the voice compelled him, “Drink.”  Guy felt a thick, coppery liquid sliding down his throat and managed a choking swallow.

Even though he still could not open his eyes or move, Guy somehow felt like that guttering spark had found new purchase.  A sudden clamor from down the tunnel caught his attention.  It must be Vasey and Isabella returning with more men, he thought. Guy heard the voice whisper, “I mustn't be seen here, but I will return for you.”  Guy felt his body being gently laid back down against the flagstones.

Moments later, Guy heard Vasey gloating over his “victory” to anyone who happened to be within earshot and the muted jangle of the men’s spurs as they passed by.  At one point, he sensed Isabella standing nearby and staring at him for a few moments, until Vasey urged her to move along.  Guy found himself wishing that he could see her face.  He wondered if it would reflect any regret over her actions…or had hatred and anger consumed all that had been good and decent in the girl he once knew?

Not long after the last footfalls faded away, Guy felt a slight breeze against his face, marking the return of his mysterious visitor.  The voice, now seeming vaguely familiar to Guy, said, “We must get you somewhere safe now.”  Guy felt strong hands slide under his shoulders and begin to drag his body across the flagstones.  The movement caused the pain from Guy’s wounds to come back with a vengeance…until the blackness finally took him and he knew no more.

Guy was not sure how much time had passed, but he found he was now able to open his eyes and move his limbs. By the feeble light of a single candle burning in the far corner, Guy took in his current surroundings.  It was a small, windowless room and the bed, which Guy currently occupied, was its only piece of furniture.  He heard the soft snick of a latch and quickly turned his gaze to the room’s single door, which now swung open.  Guy’s eyes widened in shock.  “What are you doing here”, Guy exclaimed with a raspy growl, “I do not understand, how am I…?”  The cloaked figure in the doorway gave an enigmatic smile, and simply said, “You are now as I am.  Vampire.”
