attempt at a story

The Cure seemed appropriate.

He fiddled with the chain lock on the bathroom door, his hands shaky and his hair hanging wet in his eyes. The lock clicked free and he pushed the door roughly. His feet lagged behind slightly; his hands gripped the doorknob, his shoulders pulled forward and his legs dragging limp. He lost concentration on the grip and fell completely onto the dark thin carpet.

"Syd". He heard his name being called but he didn't bother to move. There was a faint pain in his wrist and his nose itched but he didn't want to move.

"Syd!" There were giggles. A girl he'd meet only a couple of hours ago at the beginning of the night. What was her name? She had dark hair - yes, dark hair. What was her name? Then another voice.

"Syd". He felt someone's hand on his back. "Syd - you okay? What's up?" The voice was more familiar this time. He rolled over. He coulddn't see the face properly. It was another girl.

"Mmmm?" he said. He started laughing. He felt so stupid. Lying on the ground with his hair wet and someone fussing over him like a baby. No - that was her name - Mary.

"Oh, Mary!" he said, sitting up. Falling over again. She laughed and grabbed his wrist. The other girl was standing nearby and she rushed over. The girl with the dark hair was trying to pull Mary away with him attached. But what was her name? He pulled Mary back. "What's her name..." he said in a slurred whisper.

"Jane", Mary said back. "Syd, are you okay? Ah, your hair looks so funny like that. But...you are okay aren't you?" She pulled her wrist away and turned to face him with her eyebrows knotted. The she grinned. He immediately sprang to life, raising his eyebrows and shaking his head to flick the water out of his hair.

"I can do Robert Smith!" he said gleefully. She giggled. On the other side of the room Jane giggled at someone else in the same way. Syd began ruffling his hair vigorously, bent over double, and then sat up and flicked his head dramatically.

"Ohhh yeah", Mary said laughing. "That's it, for sure. Jane, look at this..."

Jane walking unsteadily over and gazed unblinkingly at Syd. She smiled blithely and grabbed his wrist again. He didn't move. "Janey - what are you doing? Where are you going..." Mary said. She didn't answer as she tried to pull Syd away. Then she stopped - her phone. She sighed impatiently and stepped into the light of the hallway.

In the darkened room the stereo began to play a song. Xylophone noises, pop sounds from a few too many years ago...it was the music Mary liked. And here she was with Robert Smith. "Come on!" She pulled him into the middle of the room, away from the bathroom door. "You like The Cure don't you? Everyone does...and you look the part..." She laughed as he spun her around. Even more as he tripped and fell over his unhemmed trousers and cigars spilled out of his pockets.
