Gazing
--
The first time Dongwoo meets Woohyun, he thinks that maybe the boy is a bit too lost for his own good. Woohyun is staring up at the sky, eyes moving slowly with the clouds as they pass by. Dongwoo doesn’t really know what to make of him besides the fact that he has a really nice jawline. But when Woohyun turns to smile at him, Dongwoo thinks that he might just fall in love.
--
The second time Dongwoo sees Woohyun, he walks up to him and introduces himself.
Hi, my name is Dongwoo. What’s yours? He remembers asking that. Woohyun looks over to the shorter boy and smiles that smile that makes Dongwoo see stars.
It’s Woohyun.
Do you come here often?
I do, Woohyun says. He glances back up at the clear, blue sky and lets out a content sigh. The clouds are beautiful this time of year, he says quietly to himself as Dongwoo joins him in cloud gazing.
You think so? I like it better when the sky’s a darker blue, Dongwoo replies. Neither of them say much after that, but Woohyun decides that he wants to see Dongwoo again and asks for his number.
--
The third time Dongwoo sees Woohyun, it’s because Woohyun texts him and asks him to meet him at the park. Dongwoo dresses at the speed of light, grabbing two different socks and jamming his feet into shoes before running out to the park at top speed.
It’s dark this time, and Woohyun is laying on a blanket, staring up at the sky.
Hey. Dongwoo, right? Come join me, Woohyun says as Dongwoo approaches him. Something feels weird, but Dongwoo ignores it and joins him on the soft blanket.
The stars were pretty tonight, and I thought you’d want to see. Woohyun smiles at Dongwoo again and shuffles closer to him so their arms are touching. Dongwoo feels his face heating up from the small touch, but he hopes that the darkness is enough to cover it up.
Quietly in the darkness, their hands are on top of one another, and Woohyun’s fingers lace themselves with Dongwoo. Dongwoo thinks it’s comfortable so he doesn’t say anything as Woohyun points out constellations and draws random pictures in the sky with his finger.
Dongwoo eventually joins in, and they create a whole universe for themselves in the sky.
--
Dongwoo doesn’t remember the exactly what happens every time he meets up with Woohyun. They’ve met so many times now, Dongwoo can say that he’s found someone he can really fall in love with.
But the only thing that bothers him is the way Woohyun greets him every time they meet.
Hey. Dongwoo, right?
Dongwoo thinks that by now, Woohyun would know who he is. But Woohyun always flashes that lopsided grin at Dongwoo as soon as he sees any doubt on his face, and Dongwoo brushes it off.
--
It’s the hundredth time Dongwoo meets with Woohyun, but it’s in the last place he thought it would ever be.
Dongwoo is interning at the hospital underneath a doctor to complete his residency. He’s always dreamed of being a doctor and helping people ease their suffering.
The doctor hands him a chart and smiles at him, ushering him towards his first patient’s room. Dongwoo glances at the chart and stops.
Nam Woohyun.
It’s not the Woohyun he knew, right?
Dongwoo cautiously opens the door after knocking on it once and peeks his head inside to see Woohyun in a hospital gown, staring out at the sky through the window from his hospital bed.
When Dongwoo closes the door behind him, Woohyun’s eyes slowly move over to him, and he smiles.
Hi. I’m Woohyun. Are you the new intern?
Dongwoo stares at him in confusion for a moment before glancing down at his chart. Trauma. Short term memory loss. Woohyun can’t remember anything new for longer than a few hours after his accident.
Yes... You don’t know who I am? Dongwoo asks, flipping the pages on the chart.
No. I don’t think we’ve met before. There’s a Dongwoo in my phone, though. Is that you?
Dongwoo swallows and smiles before avoiding his question.
--
That’s the thing with Woohyun. He’s allowed a little bit of outside time to go to the local park. He came back one day, telling us to remind him every day of a boy he met, someone named Dongwoo.
Dongwoo nods at the nurse’s explanation before thanking her and sitting down on a bench.
That explains why Woohyun greets him the way he does. It explains why Woohyun seems so excited about things he’s seen before, and why every time Dongwoo goes to meet him, it feels like meeting for the very first time.
Dongwoo realizes that despite meeting a hundred times, he doesn’t really know anything about Woohyun.
Why so pensive?
Dongwoo looks up to see Woohyun standing in front of him in normal clothing, about to head out to the park.
Just thinking about things, Dongwoo says with a sigh.
Want to come watch the clouds with me? Woohyun asks, pointing towards the park across from the hospital.
Dongwoo gives him a fond smile before standing up and squeezing his shoulder.
Sure. I heard they’re nice this time of year.
