In 1984 that the Edmonton Oilers won their first Stanley Cup. In 1990 they won their last Stanley Cup in a winning streak on five occasions: 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1990. Having fallen by the wayside, a win this year would have made Edmonton the first Canadian team to win the NHL’s championship since the 1993 Montreal Canadiens. The 1967 original National Hockey League (NHL) expansion added six new franchises for the 1967-68 season, doubling the size of the league to 12 teams. Hockey franchises have since become big business, with $500 million+ in fees for a new team to join the league with NHL Expansion rumoured to reach 36 Teams in 2024/5 with many being located in the U.S.
Up until the 2004-05 season, it was no secret that the league's owners were relying on expansion-team payments to make their balance sheets. The 2004-05 NHL lockout was a labor lockout that resulted in the cancellation of the National Hockey League (NHL) season. Neither side was willing to back down and an impasse was reached - consequently, the entire season was cancelled by February.
