With an estimated population of at least 40,000 people, Mohenjo-daro prospered for several centuries,
but by c. 1700 BCE had been abandoned, along with other large cities of the Indus Valley Civilization.

The site was not rediscovered until the 1920s. Significant excavation has since been conducted at the
site of the city, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, the first site in South Asia
to be so designated. The site is currently threatened by erosion and improper restoration.

The Piri Reis map is a world map compiled in 1513 by the Ottoman admiral and cartographer Piri Reis.
Approximately one third of the map survives, housed in the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul.
When rediscovered in 1929, the remaining fragment garnered international attention
as it includes a partial copy of an otherwise lost map by Christopher Columbus.

The Younger Dryas impact hypothesis (YDIH) or Clovis comet hypothesis is a speculative attempt to
explain the onset of the Younger Dryas (YD) cooling at the end of the Last Glacial Period, around
"12,900" years ago, yet to be contested. It may have been way more recent, ie. 6000 years ago.
