Winter Solstice (poem)

Dec 22, 2023 11:11

Yesterday the sun was too bright
Straight in my eyes, low on the horizon
Through ominous dark clouds...
Just over the trees, down the street
Of winter solstice. It feels
As though we are passing
Through heaven's gate.
Marrying to the bride of spring
Everything comes obscured by shadow
In this near death experience
Or simply the end of another season
Where the leaves fall,
And the snow falls,
We gasp for light,
If you turn with the sun
And face the trees,
It all becomes clear,
Life and the earth as we know it
Is still here!

Back to the sun,
Blue shadows stretch
Across the dried lawns
Blue skies above the ocean
Islands lie still in the mist
Far on the horizon,
Too tired to look at the shadows
And light streaking
Through the silhouettes of trees
Darkening the ground
With long streaks of light
Into the long stretch
Of nightfall, as day falls into evening
The sun sinking low
Only to disappear in the soft glow.
Winter is nigh...
Now, off you go !!
Whistling merrily into the snow. ~psp
