Wilhelmina : A Woman of Letters (poem)

Aug 04, 2023 17:50

A little old lady named Wilhelmina fell and hurt herself by tripping over her own name.
She became distracted when someone called out to her, “What’s your name?”
Startled she tripped over it, and knocked out the vowels. “W-h-lm-n”, she stuttered.
She had stumbled over the letters and as she got up, she scrambled the syllables,
“Mn-hwl,Hn-lwm, Nw-lhm” she could not remember her own name suddenly,
And to make matters worse, when she fell she had twisted her ankle.
Embarrassed, she stood there frozen in distress, unable to move
Not knowing what to do, or where she was, she seemed confused.
Not able to remember who she was. “Can someone help me?” she pleaded.
The person who asked her name repeated their question, “Who are you?”
She couldn’t answer, she felt stupefied. “Who are you?” she responded.
Who I am is of no importance to you. “Help,” she pleaded again,
As she took the weight off her ankle and stood on her other leg.
Then she remembered, she had Alzheimers and suddenly it all came back to her.
“I’m Wilhelmina,” can somebody call me a wordsmith?
She had successfully put her name back together.
So ends the tale of the scrambled letters and the lost art of names. ~psp
