In 1893, the coming together of curvilinear design, natural forms, and modernity, art nouveau became the style of young designers. The style is known by different names in different languages: Jugendstil in German, Stile Liberty in Italian, Modernisme in Catalan, and also known as the Modern Style in English. The new art movement had its roots in Britain, in the floral designs of William Morris, and in the Arts and Crafts movement founded by the pupils of Morris. The Liberty luxury department store in London played an important role, through its colourful stylized floral designs for textiles, and the silver, pewter, and jewellery designs of Manxman (of Scottish descent) Archibald Knox. His jewellery designs in materials and forms broke away entirely from the historical traditions of jewellery design. It's greatest influence was Art ala Japan. Along with modernity came simplified geometry in design, echoed through Deco, culminating in Bauhaus.
