An incredible woman is in her final days, and I only just found out she existed in the first place.

For those who don’t know, my attempts to write a fic about a group relationship have led to a bit of research on polyamory and its roots. One of the people who coined the term is Morning Glory Zell-Ravenheart who, along with her soulmate, Oberon Zell-Ravenheart, spearheaded the Neo-Paganism movement decades ago.

I don’t know nearly enough about this woman to do her justice with my words, but let me sum up what I do know: based on the ideals in Robert Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land she cofounded the Church of All Worlds; she RAISED UNICORNS (don’t ask me how she made/found them, I’m still learning); she went on a search for mermaids and mermen; she believes whatever higher power that may guide the universe is a Goddess, and worships Her in all Her forms.

Everyone either wishes or works to make an impact during their time on Earth, to have their life mean something and/or influence others. This woman has spent decades promoting free speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of sexual choice. Her efforts are a big part of the reason people understand Paganism as well as they do today. She’s part of the reason people are aware of polyamory today. She’s a hippie, she’s a witch, and maybe she is a bit crazy, but she managed to do precisely what she set out to do - she’s changed the world for the better. I'm not a hippie or a witch (though my sanity is up for debate), but I know a fierce woman when I see one, and she just became one of my heroines.

Today, she’s battling bone cancer and pneumonia, and she’s been taken home for hospice care. She’s still fighting because she feels her work’s not done yet, but according to Oberon, she’s “dancing with the veil,” and it’s only a matter of time.

I can’t believe I’m only just now learning that someone this awesome is in the world, or that by the time I fully understand just how courageous, passionate and influential she is, she’ll be gone. It's like receiving good and bad news in the form of a one-two punch. I'm sitting here kind of dumbstruck even as I type this. One thing I will do is start reading John Sulak’s The Wizard and the Witch, which is basically hers and Oberon’s biography, and start learning why I should have known her name all along. link
