[Spoiler (click to open)]Originally begun as a short story titled "The Stoker". The novel incorporates many details of the experiences of his relatives who had emigrated to the United States.
The story describes the bizarre wanderings of sixteen-year-old European immigrant Karl Roßmann, who was forced to go to New York City to escape the scandal of his seduction by a housemaid. On his way by ship he befriends a stoker. His uncle, Mr. Jacob recognizes him and takes him away. In New York this is with whom he stays, until he separates, wandering aimlessly, he becomes friends with two drifters. He finds work, but is let go for helping an inebriated wealthy acquaintance. He finds employ at a theatre, and adopts the name "Negro" as his own. So a white boy, named black... after which the novel was never really finished. So we'll never know what happened to him. )))
